Most people hear the word “writer” and associate it with long hours and little pay.

Turns out that may not always be true if you’ve got a laptop and a will to learn.

Troy Ericson made over $300,000 as an email copywriter in 2020, and below he shares his Top 5 Tips to Make 6 Figures as an Email Copywriter:

  1. Get your feet wet right away.

Sign up for email lists from all the companies and niches you enjoy. See how they write. They usually tell stories since people primarily operate off of emotion. They also write with curiosity, current events, and personal touch. Start hand-copying your favorites, or at least typing them out every day until you get VERY good at recognizing patterns. Then just start writing your own as if you have a company. Just make one up & write!

  1. Send your ‘practice samples’ to business owners in Facebook groups.

There are hundreds of amazing Facebook groups that are full of business owners who need emails written for them. Join those groups, post a photo of yourself along with an emotional story about how and why you got into email copywriting, and click ‘post’. You’ll be surprised how many people start to like you and your story. Then keep posting valuable tips you’ve learned from tip #1. Lastly, send a message to everyone who likes or comments and just start a conversation with them. Some will turn into clients.

  1. Write 1-3 emails for your prospective clients.

Send these emails to the prospect with no strings attached. If you do good, they’ll be blown away by how well these emails did. While they’re excited, remind them of how much they made from a few simple emails you wrote and offer to write one email each day for $2-3k/mo. That’s what I started at. And it was a no-brainer for my clients because I was making them a minimum of $30-50k/mo just from email.

  1. Learn how to manage an email list.

You become elite and can charge more once you know how to manage an email list. This includes creating automated emails, avoiding spam and the Promo tab, and strategizing your daily emails. Not many people can do all of these things—so if you do, you can get paid more. You’ll also have a larger role in the business’s strategy since email is crucial to every business.

  1. Get a mentor.

The great ones never stop learning. I pay $30K+ each year for mentorship. It’s what got me to where I am. So I’d encourage you to do the same. Once you stop learning, you stop growing. So keep networking! You’ll meet SO many amazing people, and many will turn into friends and clients, too.
