What is the difference between a C cell solvent trap vs a D cell solvent trap?

To some, the idea of a solvent trap might sound alien. If you go on the web and search for a solvent trap, you will get different results. One of your observations will be the differences in their names, such that it almost looks like they are in multiple categories.

However, before we proceed to the differences between these solvent trap cells, you must know that the solvent trap is a device plugged into the muzzle of a firearm solely to catch and trap firearm cleaning solvent during a cleaning operation. It serves as a barrel plug, and in no way does it allow bullets to pass through it.

How to identify the C cell solvent trap from the D cell solvent trap

For regular users of the solvent trap, telling the differences between the different categories of solvent traps may not be a problem. But, not everyone can do this.

The main factor in classifying the solvent traps is their sizes, which are most times represented as cells. Therefore, to not purchase a solvent trap and realize that it does not match your firearm, you should be able to identify the various cells.

After searching the web for solvent traps, you will often find some classified as C cell solvent traps, and there are also others categorized as D cell solvent traps.

The main difference between both is that the C cell solvent traps are smaller in size than the D cell solvent traps – so are their accessories.

Solvent trap tubes

The solvent trap tube is the housing for both the cup and all its content. Usually, the top-quality solvent trap tubes are made of carbon steel, aluminum, and titanium to keep them effective while preventing the escape of solvent or debris.

For instance, while a C cell solvent trap can have an inside diameter of 1.03” and outside diameter of 1.23,” a D cell solvent traps like the 7075 Billet Aircraft Aluminum Adaptive Solvent Trap Kit has an inside diameter of 1.18” and an outside diameter of 1.57”.

As much as the solvent trap tubes come in several classifications based on their cell sizes, you need to go for one that suits your firearm.

End caps for solvent trap tubes

Another crucial asset of the solvent trap tube is the endcaps. It’s explicitly designed to catch the solvent and other slimy materials from dripping off the firearm’s barrel during the cleaning process.

They are threaded to allow for easy attachment to the solvent trap tube, disassembly, and cleaning. This is another area where you also need to be watchful while searching for your solvent trap. The endcap’s size and threading of the solvent trap you are purchasing need to be compatible with your barrel thread.

Most C cell solvent traps are limited to a thread protector size of 1/2 X 28, whereas some D cell solvent traps have more thread mount to include 1/2 X 28 and 5/8 X 24.

Also, while purchasing a solvent trap part such as the endcaps, cups, or tubes, you need to ensure you buy the items that belong to the same cell category as the one you already have. This means that the C cell solvent trap accessory will not be suitable for a D cell solvent trap kit.
