Hyundai Motor Group has recently unveiled its brand new EV platform called E-GMP. The announcement was made during an online E-GMP Digital Discovery event where the company announced the platform will serve as the core technology for Hyundai’s next-generation BEC lineup.

Starting with 2021, the E-GMP will be included in several different models, including the IONIQ 5.

What Advantages Does the EV Platform Bring?

There are several misconceptions about electric cars that the E-GMP seems to almost directly demolish. The group’s new platform promises:

  • Increased development flexibility, making room for more models to be launched faster;
  • Enhanced driving performance, which helps drivers be more in control of their vehicles;
  • Better safety features enabled by this control;
  • More car space for both passengers and luggage, which ultimately means these models will become a lot more comfortable, and useful, etc.

Hyundai’s current front-wheel driving models are already very popular for being some of the most efficient cars in the lineup, but with the rear-wheel E-GMP, the company is extending its technological leadership into areas that more directly benefit the consumers.

E-GMP reduces complexity by leveraging modularisation and standardisation and enables the company to speed up its development of products that can be applied to most of its vehicle segments, from SUVs to sedans. Additionally, the new cars in the line-up will satisfy consumer expectations regarding better vehicle performance. One benefit the company has announced is a high-performance model that can accelerate from zero to 100 kph in around 2 seconds, and that can go up to as much as 260 km/h.

The platform is also explicitly designed to offer better curbing performance and improve vehicle stability at high speeds, by achieving optimal weight distributions between front and rear. This design achieves a lower centre of gravity through a low mounted battery back as well as by adopting electric motors in the same place the engine would have been previously placed.

The battery is safely secured through a support structure made from high-strength steel, and additional steel components are added to increase rigidity. Energy-absorbent sections manage to take in collision energy efficiently.

As for interior space, the E-GMP design comes with a long wheelbase, short front, and rear, and a better mount beneath the floor, leaving plenty of extra room in the vehicle designed to increase passenger comfort.

Over to You

Hyundai’s announcement was met with many positive reactions, as both the market and consumers are looking more and more for electric vehicle options. The E-GMP is designed to propel the group as a leader in the field of electric cars, and from the first look into this platform, it seems Hyundai is, indeed, on the right track.
