Keturah Hamilton on COVID and our Current Environment

I was visiting my home country, Jamaica, when the pandemic hit emergency proportions. I was supposed to be there for a week, but I ended up spending just two days. I remembered waking up to the news that people were dying everywhere, the financial markets were crashing, flights were being canceled, and the world was in an uproar. When I heard that all flights from Europe to the US were cancelled, I jumped on the next plane back to Los Angeles to make sure I could make it home.

I had no idea that this experience would change so many lives and change the world as we knew it. One month turned into what feels like a life time. People are out of work, restaurants are closed, and you have to be quarantined from family and friends. Hugs, kisses, and handshakes are scarce, not socially acceptable.

As soon as I felt I was adjusting to the lock down, a storm erupted with all the senseless police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and so many other unmentioned fellow human beings. My soul was so sad. I decided to be a part of the solution by joining protests, so that my voice could be heard. This isn’t a moment for me, it’s a movement that I am proud of and honored to be a part of.

Even though 2020 is a disaster, I believe it can be unforgettable. Let’s continue to pursue equality and make this a year of uplifting, rebirth, reflection, gratitude, and acknowledgements. This too shall pass and we must emerge stronger and united as one people.
