Testosterone in men plays a vital role in many bodily functions. An imbalance in testosterone levels can have a significant impact on both mental and physical well-being. Here are 7 common symptoms of low testosterone in men and possible solutions for treatment.

1. Erectile Difficulties

Testosterone is necessary for getting and maintaining an erection. It is involved in triggering a series of chemical reactions in the brain that signal for an erection to occur. With low testosterone levels, achieving an erection becomes difficult, both during sexual intercourse and spontaneously. Erectile dysfunction is also caused by other health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid conditions, and depression. Smoking and excessive alcohol use can also contribute to the condition.

Alongside helping with producing an erection, testosterone is also necessary for the development of the testicles and penis. So, a disproportionately small penis and testicles may be caused due to low testosterone levels. Other conditions affecting penis and testicle size are varicocele, hypogonadism, aging, and prostate surgery.

2. Reduced Sex Drive

Sex drive, or libido, is used to refer to a person’s desire and urge to engage in sexual activities. A low sex drive means a person does not experience the desires relating to sex. Testosterone plays a vital role in maintaining male sex drive. A decreased libido can indicate low testosterone levels. While sex drive does tend to decrease with aging, a drastic drop is generally explained by low testosterone levels.

3. Low Red Blood Cell Counts

Studies have shown that low testosterone levels affect red blood cell counts which increases the chances of developing anemia. Extreme fatigue and decreased energy are also seen in men who are low on testosterone, and these are known symptoms of anemia. Other side effects of blood counts include dizziness, difficulty sleeping and concentrating, and increased heart rate.

4. High Body Fat and Low Muscle Mass

Individuals with low or decreased testosterone levels may experience an increase in body fat while also losing muscle mass. Testosterone plays a vital role in many bodily functions and building muscle mass is one of them. While there may be a decrease in muscle mass, this is not directly linked to loss of strength and function. Men with an imbalance in sex hormone levels may also develop a condition called Gynecomastia where mammary gland tissues become enlarged.

5. Hair Loss

While hair loss is a natural part of aging in men and is also caused by genetic inheritance, sudden hair loss can mean low testosterone levels. Hair loss includes balding, and loss of facial and body hair. Once an individual’s testosterone levels are back up, you will notice increased hair growth. You can find the best testosterone booster at Dallasnews.com, which will help you with recovering your testosterone levels. However, keep in mind to always consult a doctor before using any sort of medication.

6. Mood Swings and Memory Loss

Physical and mental well-being are linked to each other, so an imbalance in physical health will affect mental health too. Testosterone plays an important role in many bodily functions, so any disturbances to that will indirectly affect one’s mental well-being.

Therefore, low testosterone causes frequent mood swings. Low testosterone levels are also associated with aging. According to studies, by the age of 30, men will experience decreased testosterone levels. Aging along with affecting testosterone production also affects cognitive functions such as memory. So, doctors theorize that testosterone levels may contribute to changes in memory capacity.

7. Decreased Bone Density and Mass

Men with low testosterone levels can also develop a condition called osteoporosis which results in bone loss. Testosterone helps with the production and strengthening of bones, which contributes to overall bone mass and density. Insufficient levels of testosterone, specifically in older men, can lead to lower bone volume and mass. This makes them more susceptible to bone damage and fractures.

Causes and Treatment

Low testosterone levels are caused by many factors, some of them being cancer treatment, alcohol use disorders, infections, obesity, metabolic disorders, autoimmune diseases, stress, and testicle injuries. Low testosterone levels are associated with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular diseases. Treatments vary from providing patches and skin gels to oral medication and injections that boost testosterone levels.

It is essential to keep track of your health and identify any irregularities. If you are experiencing any of the 7 symptoms listed above, make it a priority to consult a doctor. Now that you know all about the signs and symptoms of low testosterone levels, make sure to keep them in mind to make identifying issues easier.
