Book review: Karlaz, The Way of Freedom

In his new book, Tomas Gavlas put practical wisdom of ancient pilgrims, monks, and philosophers into one book you can re-read time and time again.

The main character in this book is called Elias, who begins the tale in a situation that no doubt almost everyone has been in before, where they are feeling regretful of wasted time in their lives and wallowing in it. Until Elias meets his saving grace: Karlaz. Karlaz (meaning free man)shows him the way forward in life and how to move on from the past. Together they go on a journey in a physical and spiritual sense.

Despite being fiction, there is a lot to take out of this book once you have finished reading it, there is advice that you can adapt to your everyday life. I loved how the author weaved together entertainment with the interesting story and education with the wonderful teachings implemented within.

There are many wonderful quotes that have stuck with me like “It is not difficult, all you must do is turn towards equilibrium. Cast off the surplus, and add to what is lacking.” and “They do not hold them like a hostage who is supposed to bring them happiness in life, and do not push them to some imaginary state of perfection. Quite the opposite, as whoever is conscious of their own faults can feel for the other and is better able to excuse their imperfections.”

Each lesson is summed up with a simple sentence (e.g. you should think about whom you might become) and then explained with a story and more detail. I enjoyed this as I knew where the book was going and was able to remember all of the lessons throughout. Furthermore, it provided the book with a clear structure and pace. Also, the Goodreads rating is 4.7 which speaks for itself.

Karlaz: The Way of Freedom by Tomas Gavlas is a wonderful book involving an interesting tale to do with spirituality and philosophy. It is extremely original and unique – I have never read anything like it before!

5/5*
