Hip-Hop Artist Reflects Soul and Beauty from His Life with Cape Verde

Reading Time: 5 mins read

David Jason Thorp’s life took a very interesting turn in 2020. In just 7 months, David managed to create his record label, gain an audience of over 110,000 throughout social media, and produce over 200,000 music streams.

To many who have known him, after seeing him serve 17 years in the military and progress toward a corporate-level position in New York City, this now flourishing music career might have seemed to come out of left field, and to those same people, it might come as a surprise when they find out where most of his audience comes from: Cape Verde.

David was born in Quincy, MA and grew up deeply immersed in Cape Verdean culture. Most people outside New England wouldn’t know you were referring to a multi-island country just south of Portugal when you say the words “Cape Verde.” The reason for it is because historically, Cape Verdeans only immigrated to that area of the U.S., so generally people aren’t aware that Cape Verde even exists. Armed with a life experience from a very passionate culture, David aims to change that. Cape Verdean music made it into David’s heart at a very young age. His closest friends and relationships are the Cape Verdean people he surrounded himself with since grade school. You see, David was never really interested in doing what was popular; rather, he saw opportunities to stand out from the crowd. He saw an opportunity to embrace another culture and reflect all its beauty and soul.

In 2020, David was able to move so fast because he first looked deep within himself and to the audience he knew and loved. He began creating wildly unique and creative content that embraces his life with Cape Verde. Over the past year, David has become a prominent influencer, and his content is spreading fast to Cape Verdeans all around the world. Because of his unique position and connection to the culture, David was made a publisher on Cape Verdean Beautiful People, which is one of the largest Cape Verdean platforms in the social media world. David continues to spread the love, embracing the music and culture and building up his brand. Never before has an outsider gotten so deep into their culture with such a deep understanding of the music and its Kizomba-inspired way of dancing and touched the hearts of so many Cape Verdean people in the way David has.

Cape Verde is a relatively poor country, and like any group of people who endure hardships, they have character. They have resilience, and they have soul. David’s life story and his music reflect those qualities. His father passed away in 2003 from complications with alcoholism, which led him to serve 17 years in the military, including time in the Iraq war. Whether at home or abroad, David has lived a life of culture that most Americans do not.

So with no surprise, David’s music reflects his desire to stand out. His tag line “I don’t rap, I make music” is about staying outside the box and giving people a style, a personality, and a product that they’ve never seen before.

His flow is crisp, sexy, and full of substance. His hooks are catchy and dripping with soul. His album, Story No One Ever Told, has produced over 200,000 streams on Spotify. His latest single, “5am,” released on November 14 (his father’s birthday) has already been streamed 55,000 times. Most people don’t get to see it, but when you listen to his music or watch him tell his story, it’s hard not to believe they are witnessing a star being born.

David continues to deliver music for enthusiasts who are searching for a fresh up and coming artist. Learn more about David Thorp and his music by visiting him on Instagram or his YouTube channel.
