Medical Director Dr. Shirin Peters Takes a Preventive Approach to Primary Care for Women and Minorities

All health professionals take an oath to serve all and do what they can to fulfill their patients’ needs. It is rare for a health care provider to go beyond the oath, continuously seeking to fulfill patients’ individual needs, while also supporting and pursuing diversity. Therefore, it is essential to highlight medical service personnel such as Dr. Shirin Peters.

Shirin and her team feel privileged to be in service to their patients. Their enthusiasm toward giving care, and the inclusivity they exemplify by catering to people regardless of background, has endeared them to the community.

As a primary care provider, Shirin has always sought to fulfill the health needs of others. She attended medical school at New York Medical College and completed her residency at the former St. Vincent’s hospital in Manhattan. Using what she learned about the business of medicine, she founded Bethany Medical Clinic as a way to help New Yorkers overcome the unique challenges they face.

While New York City has many opportunities for personal growth, professional development, cultural exploration, and an endless amount of things to do, New Yorkers are often faced with a huge challenge: the busy city life causes people to not prioritize their health. As a New Yorker herself, Shirin is well aware of this problem and strives to address it.

Shirin faces health issues head-on through providing personalized, predictive, and compassionate care. Each patient’s symptoms and experiences are unique, so they deserve individual care. Health Problems should be addressed before they happen, rather than just reacting after a problem worsens. Lastly, though her team sees thousands of patients, each patient should feel like a priority when they walk through the clinic’s doors, so treating them respectfully and with the right attitude is critical.  At the end of the day, it is not just about responding to the concerns of their patients; the true goal is to help New Yorkers shape their own proper journey to health.

Shirin’s first solution to the health problem in New York City is to provide comprehensive care: their services include Primary Care, Dermatology, Psychotherapy, Endocrinology, and more. The process of searching for a health care provider can be hard. Rather than patients having to do that, they can treat Bethany Medical Clinic as their go-to center for health care, and the clinic can treat them or recommend them to another resource as needed.

Next, as a female-owned and minority-owned business, the clinic is commended for its active commitment to diversity. They do not just fulfill patient needs, but they ensure the personal comfort of their patients through by pursuing anti-racist policies, addressing injustices in the health care system, and having conversations about ways to treat everyone with respect.  “Women – and working mothers in particular – can not take time away from their workplace to get routing care” explains Shirin. “We knew from the outset that we needed to offer early morning appointments, evening appointments and Saturday appointments to meet the needs of these particular patients at our practice. African American women are twice as likely to die from cervical cancer as white women, and instead of accepting this, we tried to look at why. We ultimately created literature to distribute to patients around the importance of routine pap screening and around treatment options after cervical cancer is diagnosed, when we found out that black women are simply less likely to be counseled by a medical professional in these two areas.”

By offering patient-centric care that meets the specific needs of her patients, Shirin was able to steadily grow her practice over the past nine years. In the years to come, she hopes to offer new and innovative ways to support her patients. Dr. Shirin Peters will continue making a positive impact in the health sector through how she is leading her clinic in creating personalized and optimal health care, while also addressing social issues.
