Everyone loves to dress up for a Sunday service. Men like dressing up with suits while women prefer skirts and blouses. But the most important part of dressing up for church has been hats. Hats may seem like they are a choice of fashion, but in reality, they have a religious purpose.

Since the 1910s, women have covered their heads with Chapel veils, and that’s how the tradition of covering the heads started. Soon wearing church hats not only became common, but a necessity. It became a church tradition for older women to wear hats to church.

Now one may think that hats are a bold fashion statement, but that time, hats were a religious obligation. Women had to wear it to cover their heads during the church service.

Hats were bold, bright, and colorful, featuring different brims. And even though the hats were so well decorated, their purpose was to act as a cover for women’s heads. Since the 1950s, times have not changed. Now also women dress up nicely to go to church.

Some consider formally dressing up for church as a sign of respect for the service. In England, women prefer to wear skirts that touch below the knee and blouses that don’t show off much neck. Fashionable hats complete their ensemble. It may complement the outfit or add a splash of color to it.

In most cases, wearing a hat to a formal occasion may seem improper. But to church, it’s a sign of respect. Even men prefer dressing up nicely while attending church service. Nowadays, even celebrities have taken up the fashion of hats. So if you doubt wearing a hat may be too fashionable for the church, it is not. It is the correct choice.
