Lexington – First United Methodist Church (FUMC) will host a childcare center to help many children in the community. The city council and mayor have issued official stamp of approval to FUMC to work in favor of needy people. Kurt McBride is a member of the FUMC church council. He spoke in front of the city council and said that the permit issued to the church is for childcare in Lexington.

Casey Madsen owns Learning Adventures Child Care Center in Gothenburg church. Madsen got in contact with the FUMC for grooming children learning how to read and write. McBride said that the church has space to house such a center for community children welfare. He also said that their basement area is well suited for the childcare center.

Though FUMC is licensed to provide space for 85 children, the church will start with around 50 children. The age limit is six years old to fifth grade for children’s admission into the church’s childcare center. The city council has notified the church to install hardwiring and smoke alarms as soon as possible.

Mayor John Fagot spoke to the FUMC representative after the voting. He said, “Thank you for doing this, it is a great need in the community. Thank you for taking the lead on this.” Fagot also expressed hope for other churches and community organizations to follow a similar path the FUMC has.
