The global job market is becoming more skills-focused, yet the degree remains one of its most powerful hiring filters. That contradiction is easy to overlook. So why has the degree not disappeared? The answer may have less to do with whether graduates are more capable and more to do with how employers manage uncertainty. A degree is a familiar, scalable signal that allows recruiters to narrow a large applicant pool without individually testing every candidate. Micro-credentials can demonstrate a more current skill, but they do not automatically provide the same institutional reassurance.

A finance graduate with strong accounting and valuation fundamentals, for example, may still need training in Python, automation or AI-assisted analysis as these tools become embedded in financial workflows.
But there is an important distinction: micro-credentials solve the relevance problem better than they solve the credibility problem. A targeted credential can show that someone has recently learned a skill, but its value depends on who issued it, how the candidate was assessed and whether employers actually recognise it. The advantage is therefore speed and specialisation ,not an automatic replacement for the trust attached to a degree.
The Signal-Decay Problem
Micro-credentials have another weakness that is rarely discussed: their value can decay faster than the value of a degree. A university degree generally signals years of academic discipline and foundational learning, even when individual course content becomes dated. A micro-credential is often tied to a narrower skill, technology or methodology, meaning its labour-market value can weaken when that skill changes.
AI makes this problem particularly visible. A credential built around a particular generative AI platform or prompt-engineering technique may look highly relevant today but become less valuable if the software automates the underlying task. The same risk applies to certifications built around specific analytics tools, programming frameworks or digital platforms.
This creates a different kind of credential risk. The problem is not only credential inflation; it is credential depreciation. The strongest micro-credentials will therefore be those built around durable capabilities- data reasoning, cybersecurity principles, financial analysis or cloud architecture rather than training people to operate one tool that technology could eventually make unnecessary. Their shorter learning cycle is an advantage, but it also creates an obligation to keep learning.
Google vs. Apple: The Contradiction in Practice
The technology sector shows why the degree debate is more complicated than corporate announcements suggest. Google has created alternative pathways through its Career Certificates, which are designed to help people qualify for jobs without necessarily holding a four-year degree. Google has highlighted certificate holders moving into areas including IT support, data analytics and cybersecurity.
Yet the broader industry has not become degree-blind. Apple continues to list formal education requirements for many specialised positions, particularly roles where deep technical knowledge or advanced expertise matters. This creates an important distinction: dropping a degree requirement is not the same as eliminating the degree advantage.
A candidate without a degree may now be eligible to apply for roles that were previously closed to them, but they still need to compete for interviews and demonstrate equivalent capability. Alternative credentials can widen the entrance without removing the screening problem. The corporate shift is therefore less about declaring degrees obsolete and more about creating multiple routes to demonstrate employability.
The ROI Question: Who Actually Benefits?
The value of a micro-credential should ultimately be measured by economic return, not completion. For an experienced employee, however, a targeted credential can be much more valuable because it attaches a new skill to an existing record of performance.
Employers also have an ROI calculation.
