Alyun is very small – and very talented. Originally from Nanjing in China, the DTLA-based alt-pop producer is only 24 and in addition to being a staggeringly creative artist in her own right, Alyun produces for Ghostcraft Music, alongside piano maestro King Wizard & ‘Dark Polyamorous Trap Messiah’ (from his Instagram) LX Xander.
Alyun tells the story of how she began working with Ghostcraft: “I actually originally got in touch with Ghostcraft through a mutual friend. I had a phone call with Oliver Harvey. He was really friendly but also really direct and straight with me. I don’t think they usually really do internships or anything like that but I guess he liked me on the phone, because he spoke to LX, who was in LA at the time and arranged for us to meet up.”
“Over the next few weeks, I spent a lot of time at the studio with LX and the others, just doing ‘grunt work’ like tracking & mixing vocals, not really any ‘creative’ work as such, just necessary, time-consuming studio stuff,” She smiles as she recalls. “I didn’t mind putting the time in and doing this for free because I recognized that Ghostcraft were a really established company and that I could learn a lot from them.“
Soon enough, Alyun’s work started to speak for itself. “I began to show LX some of my production work in the downtime between sessions. He must have liked some of it a lot, because the next thing I knew, he was asking me to collaborate on stuff with him, which was really cool. As soon as LX and Wizard got their hands on my productions it changed everything. Everyone calls Wiz a genius, but it really is true. As soon as he touches the keys, it’s like ‘yep, that’s a hit now’, I don’t know how he does it.”
It wasn’t long before she’d been promoted to a fully fledged Ghostcraftian. “We hung out a lot at the NAMM Show this year, too. That was a lot of fun. I was super excited when LX & Oliver invited me to come to Vegas with them to record Baby Goth. LX had me engineer the session (which was a crazy, crazy session in a garage, actually), so I just recorded a bunch of takes from Baby into Ableton, then consolidated & exported the files on the car ride back to LA.”
As far as her music goes, Alyun’s production style is definitely distinctive, somehow managing to always sound clean & poppy as well defiantly bizarre, and sometimes even straight up unsettling. As an artist, her voice is soft & distinctive, with a playful, sing-song feel to her delivery and an intriguing abstractness to her lyricism. Her Spotify bio boasts “i have a belly button just like you!”. That’s reassuring.
