What is the Real Price of a Contact Center Agent vs. Voice AI

When contact centers assess the advantages of integrating voice AI into their operations, the cost of an agent is the key consideration. But what exactly is that number?

Voicing AI, a hybrid voice intelligence stack for Fortune 2000 companies, recently released a report that reveals the true cost of a contact center agent versus an AI-powered voice agent. For every contact center looking to cut costs, the report’s findings are invaluable.

“As we researched, we found that most cost comparisons in this space are embarrassingly shallow,” says Abhi Kumar, Co-founder of Voicing AI. “So we set out to provide a full model that includes loaded costs, attrition penalties, compliance exposure, and other factors. What we ended up with are numbers that every contact center CFO has been waiting for. It’s math that will hold up in the boardroom.”

Prior to co-founding Voicing AI, Kumar held positions at Oracle, Microsoft, and M12, Microsoft’s venture arm, where he evaluated and invested in enterprise technology companies globally. Through his experience assessing which technologies achieved enterprise adoption, he developed a deep understanding of the challenges organizations face when implementing AI at scale. In his role at Voicing AI, Kumar focuses on bridging the gap between AI innovation and production reality by building voice AI solutions designed for real-world enterprise environments, including banking, healthcare, aviation, and telecommunications.

“The true fully-loaded cost per contact center agent per year is something most leaders never calculate correctly,” Kumar says. “When they do, the result is uncomfortable, and it’s usually the moment a serious conversation about voice AI begins.”

Voicing AI provides a fully-loaded cost assessment so contact centers can make strategic decisions

Contact centers making cost assessments based on an agent’s cost to company are working with an incomplete number. Even when they add healthcare or retirement contribution costs, the number still lacks very real costs.

“Contact centers must understand that their agents don’t cost what they earn,” Kumar says. “They cost what they consume, which includes costs associated with recruiting, training, supervisory overhead, compliance, technology, attrition, and quality assurance. Including all those elements in your cost model produces a number that is significantly higher than the salary line. When comparing agents to voice AI, that’s the number you need to make a strategic decision.”

Voicing AI developed its fully-loaded cost structure using publicly available data from Deloitte’s Global Contact Center Survey, Everest Group’s Contact Center Operations research, and NASSCOM’s BPO sector reports. The number combines:

  • Salary and benefits
  • Recruiting and onboarding (amortized)
  • Training (initial and ongoing)
  • Technology stack (CRM, telephony, QA tools)
  • Supervisory overhead (1 supervisor per 10-15 agents)
  • Quality assurance and compliance

Adding those elements results in a total cost of $53K to $77K. But even that is conservative, as it doesn’t include costs related to real estate, facility management, or the cost of compliance incidents.

Voicing AI highlights the impact attrition has on contact center costs

Attrition is a common and costly issue for contact centers, but one that is often overlooked when determining agent costs. Voicing AI’s research found contact center attrition in India runs between 35% and 55% annually, according to NASSCOM and Everest Group. In the US and UK, the figure is typically 30% to 45%. Some business process outsourcing operations in high-stress verticals report that attrition rates can exceed 60%.

“Attrition is a structural problem in contact centers,” Kumar says. “The work is repetitive, emotionally demanding, and career-ambiguous. Management culture helps at the margins, but attrition still occurs and has a direct financial consequence that most cost models ignore.”

Voicing AI shows the improved cost and compliance voice AI provides

Establishing a cost for voice AI requires considering only three factors. The first, platform usage, is based on consumed minutes. The other two factors are implementation/integration and model management, QA, and optimization.

Assuming an example price of six cents ($0.06) per minute, a cost model involving 10,000 hours of monthly voice AI coverage produces a total cost of just $36,000. With that amount of coverage, a contact center operating at a standard average handle time of 5 minutes can handle approximately 120,000 contacts per month.

“Getting the same results from human agents would require a team of 50 to 60 running 24 hours per day, seven days per week, often outsourced to Tier-3 hubs like India or the Philippines,” Kumar explains. “Even with the highly frugal pay scales in those regions, voice AI doesn’t just provide marginal savings. It empowers a structural cost transformation.”

Along with significant cost savings, voice AI also provides compliance benefits. In the banking, financial services, and insurance industries, for example, a mishandled call can impact more than just customer satisfaction. In certain cases, an agent mistake becomes a regulatory incident.

“Voice AI systems log every disclosure, provide an auditable record of every call, and produce documentation when an escalation is triggered,” Kumar says. “While the financial value of those benefits is difficult to quantify, a banking compliance head who has navigated a regulatory inquiry will tell you they are worth more than the cost savings.”

The research Voicing AI has done shows that attrition, supervisory overhead, and compliance need to be factored into the conversation about voice AI. When the cost model is built to include those factors, the conversation shifts from technological capability to financial impact. At that point, the value of voice AI becomes much clearer.
