10 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Criminal Defense Attorney

If your future and reputation are at stake, you cannot risk your case being in the hands of someone with little knowledge of criminal law. Choosing the right defense attorney is important and can often be challenging. However, you can make it easier by asking the right questions. Here are ten questions to ask when choosing a criminal attorney.

Is Your Practice Focused Primarily on Criminal Law?

Many attorneys prefer to pursue a general practice, which means they offer legal help for cases belonging to different fields of law and do not specialize in criminal law. Ideally, you want an attorney specializing in criminal law to have the experience, knowledge, and skills to defend your case in court.

How Long Have You Practiced Criminal Law?

This question will help you understand the criminal defense attorney’s experience. Although experience is not the only factor to consider when choosing a lawyer, it is one of the most important. Ideally, you want a lawyer with years of experience successfully defending clients in similar cases.

Have You Handled Cases Like Mine Before?

There are several advantages of hiring a lawyer with experience in similar cases. Most importantly, they will be well-versed in the applicable laws for that type of crime and have experience developing a solid defense to the charges.

How Often Do Your Cases Go to Trial?

Cases can get more complicated and expensive when they go to trial, and since you always want to save time and money, it is best to check with the attorney on how often their cases go to trial. An experienced criminal defense attorney can avoid taking the case to trial through successful negotiations with the other party to settle the case out of court.

Will You Be the One Working On My Case?

While the assistance of paralegals and junior associate attorneys is helpful, you want the maximum attention of your lead attorney. Ask the criminal defense attorney if they plan on handling the case themselves or will have it assigned to someone else at their law firm.

How Long Will This Process Take?

Each criminal case is different, which means there is no set standard or rule for how long it will take to conclude. However, an attorney can review the facts of the case to guide you on the duration. Knowing how long the case will take helps you prepare.

Can You Tell Me What the Possible Outcome Will Be?

No matter how experienced a defense attorney is, it can be challenging to predict the outcome of the case. No lawyer can guarantee results; however, they can provide you with their opinion on how strong your case is and what to expect as the outcome.

How and How Often Will We Communicate?

Ideally, you want a close working relationship with your lawyer, so you need proper communication. Ask your lawyer how and how often they plan to communicate with you.

Do You Offer a Free Initial Consultation?

You should look for a lawyer that offers an initial free consultation so you can have the opportunity to meet them and discuss some basic facts of your case. This can help you choose the right legal expert for your defense.

How Much Will My Defense Cost?

Trying to figure out legal costs, such as court fees and attorney fees, can be stressful. It would help if you asked your attorney to give you a reasonable estimate of all the legal costs. Comparing estimates offered by several lawyers can help you make an informed decision on who to hire as your criminal defense attorney.
