How can those in the public domain use their platform to support good causes?

Depending on what career you choose to follow and how successful you are, there is a chance you may end up as a well-known figure in the public domain. Common examples of this in our society include musicians, film stars, TV celebs and high-flying entrepreneurs. One of the major benefits of being well-known by the public for these people is that it gives them a platform to support good causes from.

While not all use it in this way, many do actually try to use the platform they have to make the world a better place. This can often come in the form of donating some of their wealth to the causes they support or sending much-needed supplies to the charity of their choice. However, there are other ways those in the public domain can use their platform to support good causes – but what might they be?

Posting supportive, educational videos

There is no doubt that the video-sharing platform YouTube is huge around the world for catching up on the latest funny videos, celeb interviews and sporting highlights. It is also a great platform for those in the public domain to support good causes publicly from. By posting videos expressing their support or providing people with more details about the causes they care about, it can help raise awareness in a positive way to affect real change.

Nicholas Otto-Bernstein is a case in point and often showcases the good causes he supports to his subscribers on YouTube. By doing this, people such as Otto-Bernstein can spread awareness of key issues and help those fighting for them achieve more than they could alone.

Social media also key

While some in the public eye will invest in the Metaverse or look for ways to grow their wealth, others will also focus on helping good causes too. Although video sharing platforms such as YouTube are one way to do this effectively, other social media platforms are also handy.

Twitter and Facebook, for example, enable those in public life to directly promote good causes with their followers. This can lead to the issue in question being showcased to millions of people who might otherwise not have heard about it.

The direct support of someone in public life on sites such as these also helps give the good cause extra credibility and ensures people take more notice of it. With these sites being so easy to use and so handy for spreading news worldwide, they also make sense as a way for well-known figures to use their platform.

Speaking up publicly to the press

While video sharing and social media sites are new ways to demonstrate support for good causes directly to the public, speaking to the media is still a great way to go about it. This is naturally easy for those in the public domain because the press will want to hear what they think about important issues.

By calling a press conference or going on TV to speak up, well-known public figures can use their platform to make more people aware of the cause they support. With the top TV shows pulling in millions of viewers and lots of people still watching the news each day, this is a viable option.

Put on a major live event

Perhaps the last truly effective way for those in the public domain to use their platform to benefit good causes is putting on a huge live event to raise awareness. The most obvious example of this is the ‘Live Aid’ concert in the mid-1980s, which was put on to generate assistance for what was happening in Ethiopia at the time.

This concert was essentially pulled together by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, two well-known music stars back then, and illustrates how they organized a big live event broadcast around the world to help a cause they were passionate about.

In the same vein, current figures in public life could organize big live spectacles to help raise money and awareness for important issues – and often do! As with the other methods we have looked at, this is a very good option for putting causes which need support firmly in people’s minds.

Figures in public domain can make a difference

Although we all tend to think of well-known figures in public life in terms of their careers or how rich they are, many of them have a real social conscience. This makes them keen to connect with good causes close to their heart and eager to do what they can to help.

As the above shows, there are some very effective ways that public figures can use their platform to support causes which matter to them. By doing so, they not only offer their own help but also raise awareness with millions of others on a global scale.
