A New Approach to Managing Service Requests in Global IT Operations

What does a typical day look like for you as the President of Rittenhouse Communications Group, and how do you ensure it is productive?

As a design-build integrator, my day is quite varied. I spend time on research and development of new solutions with my engineering team. I’m also involved in reviewing process and procedure updates with our operations team, and working with the service team to ensure we’re delivering effectively for our local and national clients. Since 90% of our business comes from referrals and repeat clients, I focus less on sales and more on collaborating with clients to design future-ready, single-pane-of-glass solutions.

How do you stay ahead of industry trends and emerging technologies in telecommunications and security integration?

We have an office that functions as a true innovation center. Every piece of technology we deploy undergoes rigorous testing in our lab and is integrated into our innovation center. This ensures that all team members, from engineering to project management and support, are experts in the technology we use.

Can you recall a major challenge or project setback you encountered in your career and how you successfully navigated it?

Almost every project presents its own challenges. A recent one involved a client who had used a third-party lock on unit doors, requiring two separate fobs or apps for building and unit access. We tackled this by collaborating with a vendor to create a dual-technology credential, allowing us to manage both systems with one solution.

Leadership and Decision-Making

What is the toughest decision you’ve made recently as a leader, and how did it impact your team or business? Would you approach it differently today?

We recently made some personnel changes and brought in new team members who align with our company’s vision. It’s difficult to see people you like leave, but ultimately, it’s beneficial for both them and the company. Today, I’m involved in every interview, where I emphasize our values, vision, and future direction.

Thinking back, what was the most difficult job you ever held before your success, and how did it shape your career perspective?

My toughest role was in the restaurant business, working sauté on a line and serving over 600 covers in one night. It was chaotic, but it taught me the difference between merely working a job and running a company, a mindset I carry with me 24/7 now.

Skills and Influences

What is one critical skill you’ve taught yourself to support your growth as a technology innovator, and how did you master it?

Listening to clients is a skill I’ve developed significantly. Many in sales and technology are quick to talk, but slowing down to truly understand clients’ needs is crucial. It ensures we’re providing solutions that genuinely work for them.

Who have been the most influential people in your life or career, and how have they helped shape your leadership and values?

During my time at a Unified Communications firm in the early 2000s, the leadership team was accessible and available. I learned a lot from them, and we’re still in contact today. Their guidance has been invaluable in shaping my approach to leadership and business.

Community Engagement and Personal Insights

In your opinion, what personal qualities or habits have contributed the most to your success as a business leader in Philadelphia?

It’s not just about building a business but also supporting the community. I love Philadelphia and believe in being involved with local nonprofits, law enforcement, first responders, and the school system. Supporting the election of the right people is also part of being a solution in the community.

Is there one book you believe everyone in the technology or leadership space should read, and what lessons have you drawn from it?

“Traction” is a must-read. Every visionary needs an integrator, and balancing these roles is critical in business. I’ve learned I can’t do both alone, highlighting the importance of having complementary strengths within a team.

Achievements and Legacy

What do you consider your most significant professional achievement to date, and why does it stand out to you?

One of my proudest achievements is founding Rittenhouse Communications Group (RCG) and growing it into a significant player in the telecommunications industry over the past decade. This accomplishment stands out due to the lasting impact we’ve made in smart building technology, offering tailored solutions that genuinely address our clients’ needs while consistently maintaining a high referral rate, which speaks volumes about our service quality and client satisfaction.

How has your work in telecommunications and technology integration influenced your community involvement and philanthropic efforts?

My work has allowed me to see the importance of giving back. Being involved with the Philadelphia Police Foundation, the SS United States Conservancy, and other nonprofit organizations is a way to leverage our success for community good. These efforts are not only about donations but also about contributing solutions that improve the quality of life, like our telecommunications support for organizations that saved significant operating costs.

Vision for the Future

What future trends or technologies in telecommunications are you most excited about, and how do you plan to integrate them into your work at RCG?

I’m particularly excited about the continued evolution of IoT and smart building technologies. At RCG, we’re always looking to integrate these advancements into our offerings. Our PropKey App is a great example of how we’re putting automation and control into the hands of users, enhancing the experience for tenants and property managers alike.

Where do you see RCG in the next five years, and what steps are you taking now to ensure that vision becomes a reality?

In the next five years, I envision RCG expanding its reach and continuing to lead in smart building technology solutions. We’re investing in R&D and continuously improving our technology integration processes. By fostering an innovation-centered culture and staying ahead with robust testing and implementation, we’re paving the way for sustainable growth.

Conclusion

Edwards’ journey is a testament to his dedication to both his professional endeavors and his community. By focusing on innovative solutions and community engagement, Sean Edwards exemplifies the role of a leader who not only drives technological advancement but also contributes meaningfully to society. This interview highlights his ongoing commitment to excellence and his vision for a future where technology and community go hand in hand.
