Explore the extraordinary narrative of Andy Yi Li, a visionary filmmaker whose roots in a small town blossomed into international acclaim. Uncover the unique blend of creativity, resilience, and realism that defines her remarkable cinematic journey.

Raised in a small town in southwestern China, Andy Yi Li, a filmmaker who used to practice business finance, now pursues filmmaking as a way to tell stories. She has been directing since high school, standing with a passion for the drama genre. Her latest movie, “After Sunset, Dawn Arrives,” plays on self-acceptance and has gained international recognition. What she enjoys most is turning visions into reality and working every day with actors. At the moment, she is working on writing one of the full-length fiction films, “Auntie Wu,” produced by A Strawberry Pictures and directing another nonfiction piece, “One More Dance,” a feature length documentary project about Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park.

“Working on my most recent film, ‘After Sunset, Dawn Arrives,’ has been the most memorable and profoundly rewarding career experience. This project was a deep dive into the theme of self-acceptance, a consistent thread in my filmography, and marked a pivotal departure from my previous work as it centered on male characters. It reflected my personal growth and the meaningful connections I’ve formed with important male figures, capturing their vulnerability and emotional depth that defy stereotypical media portrayals.”

Andy Yi Li, a renowned Chinese director, and producer, has established herself as a powerful player in the film industry since the age of 16, displaying her talent for storytelling. With a stunning portfolio of 12 short films, including the widely praised “Wei Lai,” Li has received recognition for her remarkable work in the industry.

Directed by Robin Zhongyu Wang and co-produced by Andy Yi Li and Naomi Shroff-Mehta, ‘Wei Lai’ has not only won Best Comedy at Best NFMLA Awards but has also received critical acclaim for the originality of its story. The film is showcasing and nominated at Oscar Qualifying Bronzelens Film festival and Rohde Island International Film Festival. The film depicts the story of Wei-Lai, an 11-year-old Chinese American boy fed up with his parents’ discipline and offers himself for adoption by his best friend’s family. The movie revolves around identity, family relationships, and cultural perception in a coming-of-age comedy that has captivated audiences worldwide.

Andy Yi Li, producer of “Wei Lai,” was a crucial player in the film’s development, from the script to the production and finally to the distribution. Her accomplishments include finding challenging filming locations, for instance, the top island seafood restaurant, and casting Arthur Zhang as the lead, whose performance is so great that it is highly praised. Li’s detailed coordination ensured the smooth running of the production on set within a limited budget.

What stands out in Li’s short film is the teamwork encouraged by award winning director Robin Wang on set. Working alongside acclaimed British Film Producer John Watson, known for “Robin Hood” and “Phantom,” Li learned valuable information that helped her in filmmaking.

Producing “Wei Lai” was not an easy task. The hardest part for Li was finding the exemplary main character, Wei Lai, and the right chemistry between Wei Lai and Luca, Wei Lai’s best friend. It was essential to overcome these challenges; Li’s leadership was critical to managing them—from acquiring locations to coordinating a large cast—on a tight budget and schedule.

The rewards, though, were significant. Wei Lai was awarded at renowned festivals and was successful commercially at Omeleto, gathering millions of viewers. The film’s effect was not only quantified but also in the heartfelt responses of viewers, which confirmed the power of storytelling to cross cultural boundaries.

Looking back on her path, Andy Yi Li stated that making “Wei Lai” confirmed her love for filmmaking. The film’s success at festivals, including Oscar-qualifying ones, and its commercial success on Omeleto proved the story’s universality.

“The best thing about being a filmmaker is the extraordinary privilege of bringing a vision to life and being the creative force behind a film’s journey from script to screen. It’s about weaving a narrative from the threads of imagination and crafting a world that can transport audiences to places beyond their wildest dreams.”

Li’s personal development during the production has affected her future projects. She now tackles every project with a renewed zeal to tell stories that peel into the human condition to leave a mark. Having received recognition from reputable agencies such as CAA and WME, Li is currently directing a documentary feature, “One More Dance,” and developing her first feature film, “Auntie Wu.”(working title) Her ability to produce influential works continues to influence the film world, making her a director and producer worth watching.
