It seems that technology just continues to find ways to make it into just about every facet of life. New advances are helping save money, save time, automate boring tasks, and keep people safe. How does technology play a role in the diamond mining and processing industry, though? Though many of the methods long used to pull diamonds and other gemstones from the earth have been used for decades, there’s no doubt that a growing movement to add more technology to the process is underway, and it is happening on many levels.

David Klein Diamonds, a leader in the New York City diamond industry, is watching these changes and seeing a lot of promise from them. The company is at the forefront of the growth and development of the industry in many ways. He shared some recent insights into the role technology is planning in the industry today.

Technology in Mining Exploration

Gone are the days of random digging, and today, technology is advancing very quickly in this area. Advancing technology is making it possible for more detailed explorations, which has helped reduce the overall cost of the product and impacted the value chain from start to finish. One of the ways this is changing is in the pursuit of kimberlite deposits, which tend to offer the best access to diamonds, using seismic reflection technology. This is a new tool that allows for a better analysis of underground formations based on the way that high-frequency sound waves pass through those areas.

“This is one of the best tools available to today’s geologists. Even the most skilled professionals with years of experience will still find it difficult to locate the best kimberlite deposits, but this technology is making it more precise than ever, reducing costs with it,” shares Klein.

Worker Safety and Compliance

For many years, the focus of the diamond mining industry has been on the way people were treated during the mining process. New laws have gone into place intending to help shore up some of that risk and improve safety with it.

To help with monitoring that, there’s a new technology in place that is both improving safety in mines and providing better compliance with the laws that aim to keep people safe. New technology, like the use of autonomous trucks, is helping to keep people out of harm’s way. The use of wireless networking, obstacle detection tools, and emergency tools can be applied around the world to provide a safer experience for workers.

“I think the advancements in autonomous vehicles and other modern technology will continue to make the mining operation less dependent on people who have to struggle physically and put their health at risk for the industry and will become a cleaner, better-for-the-plant experience,” says Klein.

There are many examples of how technology can do this today. From wireless communication to the use of better sensors to detect risks, people are safer as a result. Drone technology is even working to address conflict diamonds in many areas.

This type of technology has replaced people in various ways in the industry, and while some may see that as a drawback, it is allowing people to see fewer injuries as a result of the hard work that diamond mining. It also allows people to handle tasks that machines cannot, focusing on improving the quality of life of those who work in the industry.

Technology in the Grading Process

Technology is not just something to help find diamonds, it is also a way to improve the grading of diamonds. Artificial intelligence, for example, can help to provide more precise information, and while it is not at the scale of replacing people just yet, some believe it is a component of the process.

“By providing geologists with better tools, and more technologically advanced resources, it is possible to increase accuracy and improve transparency in many ways. This is one of the most notable changes in the industry moving forward, the adaption of new technology to communicate diamond quality, value, and condition at various stages of the process,” states Klein. There is no telling how this can improve the result for investors.
