Arguments

In his Essay on Population, Thomas Malthus argued that unrestrained reproduction could not keep pace with the Earth’s capacity to support a growing population. He also claimed that the productivity rate could not keep up with the population growth, so it was necessary to limit the number of people to stay in line with the capacity of the Earth. However, some have argued that the increased productivity of the modern world contradicts his contention.

Malthus argued that there are positive and negative checks on population growth. These positive checks prevent population growth by ensuring productivity rises faster than the population. However, these checks are not perfect, and it is unclear whether they can be maintained at the present time.

The idea that human populations would eventually run out of food isn’t necessarily sound. While Malthus was an economist, he failed to predict that the world would subsequently starve due to rapid population growth. However, he believed there would be some improvement in the conditions of developing countries and humanity as a whole.

Analysis

An Essay on Population by Thomas Robert Malthus was published in 1798. Chapter VII deals with population. The essay was written to refute ideas of “perfectibility” advanced by Godwin and Condorcet, as well as attacks on property. The economic analysis in this text attempts to capture the mathematical form of the production function by analyzing the relationship between population growth and the food supply.

The general argument of Malthus’ essay on population is still debated. The changes made by Malthus in his position are crucial to understanding his overall view. Understanding the gradual change in his work in his second essay can help you better understand his reasoning. Here are some of the significant changes in the Malthus write my essay on population citation analysis:

The basic stance of Malthus’s population theory remains the same throughout the three editions, although there are some notable differences between the first and the second. For example, the first edition has a lengthy critique of the works of William Godwin, Marquis de Condorcet, and Richard Price and is based on less data than the second. It is also criticized heavily by Malthus’ contemporaries for not including complex data and the lack of empirical evidence.

Criticisms

The Malthusian theory of population growth is based on the assumption that the human population will outgrow its agricultural resources. However, this theory has since been discredited by advances in agricultural technologies. Today, globalization and trade have increased the food available to a country. In addition, Malthus’ calculations did not consider the population’s geometric or arithmetic growth. Consequently, the prediction is inconsistent with modern economic theory.

Malthus’ population theory was not the first to address population problems. Other thinkers had already discussed the issue, but Malthus’ original essay was a response to their theories. In his essay, he argued that rapid reproduction was unsustainable for human perfection.

Several critics claimed that Malthus’ theory was based on a historical model that failed to account for changes in human populations. Marx and Engels viewed this analysis as a result of Malthus’ antihistorical character. Specifically, Marx and Engels viewed Malthus’ theories as antihistorical and based on class structures. As a result, they focused their criticisms of Malthus’ population citation on class structures rather than demographic changes.

Sources

The Malthus essay on population cites several sources. Among these sources are two lectures delivered by Nassau W. Senior in 1828. Another source is his correspondence with T.R. Malthus. Both of these academic writing service wrote on population and its effect on the economy. They also influenced many other authors, including Ricardo, Mill, and Marx. Their work influenced the principles of political economy and led to accurate statistics.

Malthus’s original essay was published anonymously in 1798, but he later elaborated on the theory under his name. His 1830 condensed version, A Summary View on the Principle of Population, contains his answers to the criticisms that had been made of his more considerable work.

Malthus’s “Principle of Population” states that population growth must be checked by increasing productivity. This means limiting the population to the capacity of the Earth. This principle has been called ‘fecundity’ by modern demographers.
