How to Get Help For a Drug Addiction

Getting help for a drug addiction is something many people have trouble with. Naturally, it’s not an easy thing to do for numerous reasons. Firstly, getting clean from an addiction is a physically and mentally draining process. In fact, it is something that one will have to battle with for the rest of their life. Furthermore, the perceived negative stigma around drug addictions can make it hard to open up about addictions and reach out for help.

Most importantly, however, is that before one can even seek help, they need to admit to themselves that they do suffer from an addiction. It’s not always obvious to an addict that they are addicted to something.

Signs that You Need Help with an Addiction

When it comes to addiction, there are various common symptoms and experiences that are across all sorts of addictions, regardless of the substance(s) involved.

  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when you are not using a substance. Withdrawal symptoms are characterized as feelings of physical pain, mood swings, anxiety, and several more negative and uncomfortable feelings that occur as a result of not fulfilling a dependency.
  • Feeling like you cannot get through the day without using certain substances. This is once again a sign that you have a dependency on that substance.
  • Gradually increasing your dosage over time due to an increase in tolerance. The more one uses a substance, the less effect it tends to have on them, leading them to continually increase their dosage. This is a very common experience of addiction.
  • Losing interest or passion for things that were typically enjoyed in the past. Thoughts of acquiring and using certain drugs start to replace old hobbies, personal projects, and responsibilities. This also goes hand in hand with drug usage getting in the way of various aspects of life, including friendships, relationships, careers, and academics.

Prescription Drug Addictions

Addictions to prescription drugs have their own unique telltale signs. These behaviors, in combination with the previously mentioned behaviors, can signal an addiction to prescription medication.

  • Running out of prescriptions earlier than intended
  • Continuing to use prescription medications even after your health concern has been dealt with
  • Using someone else’s prescription with or without their knowledge

How to Get Help for a Drug Addiction

Once you, or a loved one, have admitted to having an addiction and you wish to seek help for said addiction, it’s time to look for the right drug addiction treatment center. The best treatment facility will fulfill several objectives.

Firstly, utilizing scientifically-backed treatments throughout addiction rehabilitation is an essential aspect of any good program. Such proven medical treatments include providing medications to soothe the detox process, and therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that re-configures thinking and behavioral habits for the better.

Secondly, a good program will tailor treatments specifically to each patient’s case and needs as not every form and timeline of therapies will work the same for every guest. On the same note, it’s ideal that a program re-configure patients’ treatment plans as they progress through a program

Finally, the right program will provide patients with a substantial treatment length and administer constant care throughout their stay. Recovery from an addiction is a long journey that can collapse at any one part. Thus, it requires dedication and support to ensure long-term success.
