How to Fertilize a Garden?

Plants should get light, water and nutrients to develop. While the sun offers light, rainfall and irrigation offers water, nutrients for their growth is derived from fertilizers, manure or compost. If a plant is not growing well, then you need to fertilize them to fulfill their deficiency. Plants grown in ill-drained soils or alongside tree roots will not respond well to the fertilizer. Fertilizers are of two type: organic and inorganic. Organic fertilizers are manure, cottonseed, bone meal combined and produced by companies. Inorganic fertilizers are fully man made.

Three things which contribute to a good fertilizer are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. They are usually listed in the same order on a fertilizer bag. So, a 100-pound bag with 10-20-10 fertilizer indicates that it has 10 pounds of N, 20 pounds of P and 10 pounds of K. It is a total of 40 pounds of nutrients and the rest of the content includes fillers like rice hulls, sand or perlite. A good fertilizer is the one with all the macro and micro nutrients.

Every part of the plant requires nitrogen for growth- roots, fruits, stem, leaves as well as flowers. Nitrogen provides the green color to the plant and helps in the formation of protein. A nitrogen deficiency could turn the leaves yellow and the whole plant pale green. While too much of it can kill the plant.

Phosphorus is required for division of cells and help in the formation of roots, fruits and flowers. A deficiency could lead to stunted growth and mal-nourished flowers and fruits.

Potassium is needed for several chemical processes which allow the plant to live and grow. A shortage may lead to stunted growth.

When you buy organic nitrogen fertilizers, it is important to note the cost per pound of the nutrient. Usually bigger bags and high analysis fertilizers are cheaper. For instance, a 50-pound bag with 10-20-10 content will not be more expensive than a 50-pound bag of 5-10-5 fertilizer, but the first bag will have twice the NPK content.

You also need to consider the type of grass you’re maintaining, as each variety has specific nutrient needs. You need to find the best fertilizer for zoysia grass to encourage dense growth, improve colour, and support its natural drought tolerance. Zoysia thrives with a balanced blend that promotes both root development and blade health. Choosing the right formulation will make your lawn more resilient and visually appealing throughout the growing season.

Selection of fertilizers

Usually gardeners use a complete fertilizer with two times phosphorus in comparison to nitrogen and potassium such as 12-4-12 or 5-10-5.

Some soils have high potassium to support plant growth and you don’t need more. So, you can buy organic nitrogen fertilizers to avoid injuring the plants. It is suggested to use a complete fertilizer to avoid any problem.

Never use lawn fertilizers on your garden as they have high nitrogen content. Soils with pH levels lower than 5.7 require lime. It brings calcium to the soil and lowers its acidic level.

Using fertilizer

Gardeners should use their soils every two years. It is essential for novice gardeners who don’t have much knowledge about growing plants. A soil test will reveal the levels of nutrients present in the soil and will notify the amount of every nutrient you need to add. You can purchase the fertilizer according to the content of NPK needed for your garden soil.

Ductor offers granulated and liquid quality organic NPK fertilizer which is free from any contaminants and is rich in organic content. Use it for your garden and get a flourishing plant growth.
