Social Distancing is Leading to an Upsurge in Online Gambling

Online gaming, in general, has seen a sudden surge in the wake of the COVID-19 virus pandemic. According to Steam, they received the highest numbers of users during the March 14th weekend, topping out at 20.3 million players at the same time through to the afternoon on March 15th. If anything, this is a new record when compared to the previous high of 19 million just a month prior.

Online gambling has also experienced a sudden uptick in traffic. Online casinos like uudet kasinot have reported an upsurge in the number of players that have come very close to maxing out their server’s capacity. Online casinos, in general, have had to work overtime, trying to make sure that all players were simultaneously accommodated. The fact is that adding more bandwidth for online casinos is challenging since many of their employees are working from home too. So, increasing bandwidth to accommodate more players is easier said than done!

The Real Effects of Social Distancing

Now online gambling appears to be tailor-made for such a rare predicament that requires self-isolation. The first being that players or gamblers get an opportunity to escape from the real world, which is now ridden with news of deaths and the spread of the deadly virus. So, it is a way to relieve stress by being immersed in a different world. The second being that online gambling, like gambling in general, is a social activity and offers players a community but without leaving home.

Online gambling today is a lot more immersive compared to a jigsaw puzzle, for instance. The graphics, sound, and even casinos that have limited VR all contribute towards helping players escape the real world, even if it is for a few hours. Getting sucked into a game like online poker, for instance, means that you can end up spending hours playing and not know where the time went. Not to mention that with more players online, there are lots of social opportunities in between playing a hand or wagering at a table.

Helps Continue Being Social

The lockdown in most parts of the world may have spelled a seizure of regular social life, but being social is part of being human. Online gambling helps those uprooted from their social activities to partake in perhaps the same activity online. Not only does it help two or more human beings connect but do so while having fun.

Friends in isolation can continue to have fun, and so in a way, their social interaction can continue. Gambling games like poker that offer a semblance of structure for small communities or groups of people are shown to be amongst the most popular, which further solidifies our point. In a world of social disruption, online gambling is one of the last untouched refugees by the virus.

Online Gambling Helps Get Through the Day

While many people are working at home, others who aren’t are finding it hard to get through the day. Any number of professionals like dentists, hairdressers, waiters, etc. all can’t work from home. So, people have more than enough time on their hands. Online gambling helps pass the time while allowing people to probably win some money. Many have won at slots, poker, roulette, etc. and there will be more who win.

Conclusion

Social distancing may be the need of the hour, but adapting to the new lifestyle takes time. Fortunately, the upsurge in online gambling traffic shows that people are deciding to spend their time, for the most part, constructively having fun. Hopefully, people who have a history of gambling issues are staying away from it by perhaps engaging in online games like Fortnite!
