Kate’s dual place of residence was a constant source of stress for her. Her Russian mother and Ukrainian father had difficulty communicating and agreeing to reside in one place, which is why Kate and her mother decided to start a new life in a new country, Canada. Unfortunately, Kate’s father was unable to join them. This was an incredibly overwhelming time for both of them, especially Kate, who was just 11 years old. Without realizing her mental state, her mother got preoccupied with her personal life and decided to send Kate back to Russia to live with her aging grandparents.
Kate felt like a complete outsider in Russia. The harsh reality of learning a new language and adjusting to a “foreign” culture hit her hard. Nevertheless, she braced herself and went back to school. She learned Russian from scratch, met new people, thrived in the ghetto, and graduated with a degree in music. With the support of her grandparents, Kate was brought up well despite the constant change and toxicity in her surroundings. Her grandfather instilled in her the virtues of honesty, perseverance, and justice, while her grandmother taught her the value of neatness and order.
Amid Kate’s happiness in her new life in Russia, her mother decided to change her life 360 degrees once again. She called Kate’s grandparents late at night and asked them to return their granddaughter. Once again, Kate’s life was turned upside down when she was forced to abandon her alma mater, her red diploma, music conservatory, her closest friends, and her boyfriend. She was just 15 when she gave in to the mounting pressure and moved back to Canada. She had a complicated relationship with her mom and often bounced from friend to friend to avoid spending time at home. Later, she chose to share a room with a group of young people to escape. It was tough to make ends meet on her own, but she somehow managed and got herself a job in the retail industry. While struggling, Kate met her future husband through a talent hunt website while auditioning.
What Role Did Kate’s Marriage Play in her Success?
Kate had no idea that meeting her future husband would drastically alter her life. When Kate met her mother-in-law, she felt like she got the mother figure in her life that she had been missing for so long. With her new family’s support and encouragement, Kate finished college with a degree in Accounting and Finance. Soon after this degree, she was given a routine pay raise of $0.25 per hour for outstanding achievements which was a drastic wakeup call. Her journey had just taken a massive turn for the better. She feels grateful that she had the opportunity to go through the worst, which prepared her to receive the best.
