If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we need to hold the government accountable. We turned our focus to clean water, the medical and judicial systems, meanwhile a risk that could undermine all of this and more is lying in the shadows. Taken for granted: our Power Grid. David Tice and his team break down the complex and dire situation facing our nation’s power grid in this riveting documentary ‘Grid Down, Power Up.’ Electricity and digital structures are such an integral part of our daily lives that we may never entertain the idea that it would be left unprotected. David Tice’s film tells us a frightening story, our power grid is not only vulnerable, but it has already been attacked. ‘Grid Down, Power Up’ spells out how the Power Grid operates, and who is responsible for keeping it safe. Turns out, the answer is us. As this influential, thorough documentary goes viral, we asked David Tice critical questions about his striking film.
The security of our nation’s Power Grid is something you’re passionate about, which appears with the care and work behind ‘Grid Down Power Up’. What led you to make a documentary about the vulnerability of our Grid?
I have been a geopolitical junkie all my adult life. I have been influenced by reading and meeting so many Russian defectors who informed me about Russian and Chinese plans to dominate the United States. I’ve long been a bit of a ‘Boy Scout’, in that I believe in ‘being prepared’. I have also long believed in Ronald Reagan’s adage of ‘Peace through Strength’.
‘Grid Down Power Up’ shows us this situation is multi-faceted and runs deep. This masterly crafted documentary explains not only the function of the Grid in our lives, but all the organizations involved with it. You cross barriers with bipartisan interviews from many experts, from scientists to veterans. This issue touches every facet of our society. How did you decide what voices and aspects to focus on?
Documentary film making is as much art as it is science. I got to know the subject very well and found the best experts who could tell their story and hopefully stich it together to a comprehensive message.
‘Grid Down Power Up covers not only the organization and functions of the Grid, but the different layers of its vulnerabilities. Including terrorist threats and dangers from space. This film obviously required a tremendous amount of work, in which you showcased your skill as a filmmaker. Was there a moment in this film that went differently than you expected?
Frankly, I didn’t exactly know what to expect as this is a new effort for me. I attempt to be a storyteller and an expert at logic. There were many twists and turns along the way, but frankly I’ve been blessed with very good luck and many intelligent, gifted people helping me out.
Citizens are left in the dark about many things, and your film shines a light on something that we all take for granted. Your film will prove in time to be a pivotal point in the history of our Power Grid. As people share it, it could be a key factor to political changes necessary for our future. What would surprise people the most about this undertaking?
They will probably be most surprised that this is a first-time effort. I was involved with the hit movie, Soul Surfer, which achieved a very rare A+ Cinema Score, but my primary role there was one of ‘checkwriter’.
Many people are watching this documentary, coming to terms with this threat you’ve clearly demonstrated. Most documentaries only present a problem with no solution or hope. Your film is ground-breaking by not only giving hope but a call to action. What do you hope people will think and do after they watch ‘Grid Down Power Up’?
I hope and pray that they don’t revert to going back to bed with their pillow over their head. I hope that remain optimistic and upbeat and choose to ‘join the movement’ to ensure our civilian infrastructure is protected. They can tell their friends, share the trailer, learn more through our website at GridDownPowerUp.com
They should communicate with their legislators and regulators through the powerful tools we’ve provided on our website. Failure is not an option. We’ve done this before. We’re going to choose POWER UP, not Grid down.
