Holly DeNeve: Why Composure in the Courtroom Can Change a Child’s Future

Custody hearings can be one of the most challenging experiences for any family. The way parents conduct themselves, both inside and outside the courtroom, often plays a crucial role in shaping the judge’s perception and, ultimately, the outcome of the case. Emotional reactions, composure, and the ability to put the child’s needs first are all closely scrutinized during legal proceedings.

During custody hearings, judges often pay close attention to how each parent conducts themselves in court. As Holly DeNeve notes, remaining calm, listening attentively, and treating others respectfully can influence a judge’s impression of a parent’s ability to provide a stable home.

When parents present themselves with emotional control and maturity, it signals to the court that they are equipped to handle difficult situations in ways that protect their child’s well-being. Demonstrating consistent respect for the process and the people involved can set them apart, highlighting their commitment to the child’s best interests.

Consequences of Emotional Outbursts

Losing control in the courtroom can have unintended consequences for a custody case. Displays of anger, frustration, or hostility may be interpreted as signs of instability, casting doubt on a parent’s ability to provide a nurturing environment. Judges may hesitate to grant greater custody rights if they witness repeated emotional outbursts, especially when these moments disrupt the proceedings or create tension.

A parent who reacts impulsively, raising their voice or making accusatory remarks, can unintentionally shift the court’s focus away from the child’s best interests and onto their own behavior. Even a single heated exchange can linger in the judge’s memory, overshadowing otherwise positive qualities.

Children’s Emotional Well-Being During Proceedings

Children often absorb the emotional atmosphere around them, even amid legal disputes. When a parent maintains composure during stressful court hearings, it can help the child feel safer and less anxious about the changes happening in their life. A calm demeanor from parents has a soothing effect, making it easier for children to trust that the adults around them are managing the situation responsibly.

Long-Term Impact on Children

Constant conflict between parents can leave lasting marks on a child’s emotional and social development. Children who are repeatedly exposed to anger or hostility may develop trust issues or struggle to form healthy relationships later in life. Some may carry anxiety into adolescence, finding it difficult to adapt to new situations or resolve disagreements peacefully. The ongoing tension can also affect their performance in school, as emotional stress often spills over into other parts of their lives.

Practical Approaches to Staying Composed

Preparing for court by practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or visualization, can help parents keep their emotions in check. Some find it helpful to write down key points they wish to communicate, ensuring their thoughts remain organized and focused. Setting boundaries before hearings and enlisting support from trusted friends or professionals can also make a significant difference in maintaining poise.

When parents approach these challenges methodically, they are more likely to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively. Seeking guidance from support groups or legal professionals can further reinforce one’s ability to remain calm under pressure and offer reassurance during a difficult process.
