Aetna Nathan Young Story Helping With Addiction Recovery

Nathan Young’s journey of service began early, leading him to enlist in the Army after college. Upon completing his service and returning home, he took on the challenge of managing a hotel that had once been a retirement home. Rather than simply operating a business, Nathan Young saw this as an opportunity to extend a helping hand to those in society often overlooked.

His chance to make an immediate impact came unexpectedly. A sober living house was situated near the hotel, and residents who violated the facility’s no-alcohol policy and had nowhere to go. Nathan Young took them in, offering shelter with little to no charge, recognizing their struggles and seeing their need for compassion over condemnation. This experience drove him to establish two sober living homes of his own, offering structured support and even covering the costs of treatment for those who were willing to take the path to recovery.

Nathan’s mission soon expanded beyond addiction recovery. Realizing the immense difficulty ex-convicts faced when searching for employment after their release, he began hiring them at his hotel, providing not only financial stability but also a sense of purpose. His compassion extended to the homeless and individuals struggling with extreme poverty, offering them opportunities to work in exchange for a safe place to stay.

Tragedy struck Nathan personally when his girlfriend passed away from an overdose. This heartbreaking event further solidified his commitment to supporting those battling addiction, fueling his resolve to provide meaningful solutions rather than temporary relief.

By 2020, the world was plunged into uncertainty with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Economic turmoil forced many businesses, including hotels, to shut down. After managing the hotel for over two decades, Nathan lost his position, but this setback did not deter him from his mission. With the support of a close friend, he took a leap of faith and opened an outpatient clinic in the summer of 2020. Starting with just ten clients, the clinic quickly grew, bolstered by Nathan’s reputation as a compassionate leader who prioritized people over profit.

Nathan’s long-standing relationship with Aetna played a critical role in supporting the clinic’s expansion. Aetna, a major healthcare provider, had been instrumental in covering treatment costs for many clients. Their partnership allowed the clinic to offer services to individuals who otherwise could not afford care. 

Aetna, a subsidiary of CVS Health Corporation, is one of the largest health insurance providers in the United States. Founded in 1853 and headquartered in Hartford, Connecticut, Aetna specializes in offering a wide range of healthcare plans and services. The company provides employer-sponsored health plans, individual and family health insurance, and specialized coverage through Medicare and Medicaid programs. Additionally, Aetna offers student health plans and various managed healthcare services, catering to individuals, businesses, and government programs.

As a leading player in the industry, Aetna focuses on delivering comprehensive healthcare solutions that include Medicare Advantage (Part C), prescription drug plans, and supplemental insurance. Their services are designed to improve access to quality care while managing costs effectively. Since becoming part of CVS Health in 2018, Aetna has expanded its reach, integrating healthcare coverage with pharmacy services to enhance overall patient care and affordability.

However, this partnership with Aetna-Nathan Young faced a devastating setback in late 2022 when Aetna abruptly ceased payments to the clinic. Since Aetna had been the clinic’s primary revenue source, this move threatened its survival. Financial advisors and business consultants urged Nathan to shut down operations to prevent a massive financial loss. The most pragmatic choice would have been to close the clinic, lay off staff, and discontinue services.

Yet, true to his nature, Nathan refused to abandon the people who relied on him. He made the decision to keep the clinic running, personally injecting over $5.5 million of his own money to cover operational costs and ensure that treatment remained available to those in need. To mitigate losses, he had to make difficult decisions, such as reducing staff and salaries. Despite these financial sacrifices, he continued working 16-hour days, seven days a week, to keep the clinic afloat throughout 2023.

The clinic’s philosophy, shaped by Nathan’s deep-seated belief in second chances, allowed it to become a beacon of hope for those struggling with addiction. Unlike many facilities, which enforce strict expulsion policies, the clinic maintained an open-door approach. Even clients who relapsed, engaged in destructive behavior, or had altercations with others were welcomed back. The goal was not just initial sobriety but long-term recovery, with an emphasis on treating each individual with dignity and respect.

The results of this approach have been remarkable and well respected in the community. Approximately 60% of clients maintain their sobriety for at least six months—an impressive success rate in addiction recovery. To further assist clients in reintegrating into society, the clinic implemented a job mentorship program, providing employment opportunities for those who would otherwise struggle due to criminal records or gaps in work history. The program also prepared clients for job interviews, helping them present themselves professionally despite past hardships.

An innovative aspect of the clinic’s outreach strategy involved alumni marketing. Clients who achieved sobriety were given the chance to appear in social media advertisements, showcasing their transformation. This not only provided them with employment but also encouraged others in their social circles to seek treatment, creating a ripple effect of positive change.

Nathan Young’s dedication has extended beyond the 55 Silver clinic, as he continues to support the homeless by assisting them in finding stable jobs and permanent housing. His work has helped numerous individuals escape the cycle of poverty and addiction, giving them the tools to rebuild their lives.

His commitment to service extends into his role at 55 Silver, a healthcare staffing company specializing in matching healthcare professionals with facilities in need. Under his leadership, 55 Silver has set a standard for integrity and compassion in the industry, ensuring that healthcare organizations receive highly qualified staff while also providing meaningful employment opportunities for those looking to reenter the workforce.

Despite the financial and emotional toll of his journey, Nathan Young remains steadfast in his mission. His story is a testament to the power of resilience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to helping others.
