Computer science is a rewarding field with new and exciting opportunities opening up all the time. With a qualification under your belt, you will certainly be in with a great chance of finding a stimulating role, but a selection of transferable skills will give you an even more competitive edge. For the best chance of getting invited to an interview, your resume needs to encompass relevant experiences, skills and abilities, as well as your academic prowess. Here is a look at what potential employers are hoping to see when they read through your application:

Evidence of academic excellence

Some high schools give students a basic grounding in computer science but taking a bachelor’s degree will develop your competencies and leave you workforce ready. To take your career to the next level, you could consider an online master’s of computer science. It is one of the highest academic qualifications you can obtain, and at Worcester Polytechnic Institute you can begin with minimal programming experience. After completing the foundation track, you can choose to specialize in big data analytics, cybersecurity or machine learning.

Relevant skills for a career in computer science

For the top IT positions, you will need to be confident in all aspects of advanced computing, software and technology. Along with a deep understanding of hardware and operating systems, employers expect you to be a proficient technical writer, a clear communicator and confident enough to analyze raw data.

Software development that keeps up with the latest technology

In order to prove your success as a software developer, you should be able to write and test codes and programs. Part of your skill in this area will be the ability to spot inconsistencies and correct them, before presenting a functioning software program to your employer. Some programming languages are more desirable than others, so the more you can list on your resume the better.

Influence the future by analyzing data

Computer engineers will be called upon to interpret data, then produce reports and documents that explain the results to others. Highlight your skills in this area to show that you recognize how important data is to project management and the decisions a company makes about its future.

Soft skills are vital too

Having a great set of soft skills can make your interactions with others more constructive, and ultimately make you better at your job. In computer science roles, your attention to detail will enable you to identify small problems before they become more difficult to manage. You should also show employers that you are willing to engage and cooperate with co-workers. Good communication skills ensure you can condense complex ideas in order to move a project forward.

Although CS graduates remain in demand across many different industries, it makes sense to present the best resume you can. By working on your skills and upgrading your qualifications, you will demonstrate what you can bring to a company and are more likely to impress top employers.
