The Best Pro Sports Teams in Texas

There is a lot of local pride in Texas

There is one thing that all Texans will agree on – that the Lone Star state is the best in the country. But get them to discuss the merits of different sports teams and there will be a lot of opinions. Don’t even get them started on college sports.

Texas betting fans will enjoy this as we thought we would have a go at finding out which is the best pro sports team in the state. There have been many championship-winning teams over the years, so we decided to make our decision even more contentious by naming the current top dogs. Let the arguments commence!

Football Match-Ups

Football is the center of the universe for many Texans. But it is not always the pro sports teams that rule the roost. Many towns and cities in the state revolve around the high school or college teams that dominate the very fabric of their region. But if you are talking NFL, then it is a straight shoot-out between the Cowboys and the Texans.

The Dallas Cowboys are the wealthiest sports team on the planet and flaunt their status at every opportunity. Everything is bigger in Texas, after all. But success has been a stranger in recent times. The Texans are a newer franchise and have done little to usurp the Cowboys. So we’re going with America’s Team here.

Basketball Leaders

Houston and Dallas are also represented in the NBA – as well as San Antonio, who can count on the Spurs to do the city proud. In fact, it is the Spurs that can boast the best record here, having won five NBA Championships and consistently winning over 50 games a season.

San Antonio has fallen off in recent years though, as the big names have retired. Both Houston and Dallas have won NBA Championships, with the Rockets being the first team from Texas to do so. The Spurs are historically best but the Mavs are the only ones to make the postseason in the last few years – so it’s Dallas here too.

There is more than one kind of cowboy in Texas

Baseball Kings

It is Dallas or Houston when it comes to America’s favorite pastime. Both clubs had a largely unsuccessful history until the turn of the century. But both have reached the World Series since then, with Houston edging out in front.

The Rangers barely made the playoffs for years but then made it to the World Series in both 2011 and 2012, losing to the Giants and then the Cardinals. Since then it has been a little quieter. But the Astros have been busy. Houston lost the World Series in 2005, 2019 and 2021 but has managed to go all the way once – beating the Dodgers in a seven-game series in 2017.

Other Sports

Hockey has been in Texas since the Stars relocated from Minnesota in 1993 and have been a fixture of the postseason most of the time since then. There was even a Stanley Cup triumph in 1999. But it is soccer that has really taken off in Texas on a pro sports level in recent years.

FC Dallas is an original team from the beginning of MLS (when it was still called Dallas Burn). Although it has never won an MLS Cup, it has captured the Supporters’ Shield and lifted the US Open Cup twice. Austin FC is the new team in Texas, now playing in its second season in MLS. But it is Houston Dynamo that has the most successful history, winning the MLS Cup in its first two seasons.

The Winner Is…

The San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Cowboys are two of the most successful franchises in American sports. But neither has done much of note recently. All the soccer teams have fallen away as well in the last few seasons.

So we are proud to say that it is the Houston Astros that can claim to be the best pro sports team in Texas at the current time. Looking good for another playoff run this year, they continue to be a force in Major League Baseball.
