Roma Osowo, an emerging abstract artist from the British Virgin Islands, is expanding her portfolio, adding to the growing list of minority abstract painters in America. Her vibrant artwork is a representation of her faith and an opportunity for her to inspire and express and evoke joy.

Osowo explained abstract art as the encapsulation of a subject’s essence, “I would paint a layer and simply respond to what I see.” The Abstract Artist focuses mostly on acrylic and mixed media for her work. Her color selection is vibrant — something that Osowo uses to describe her love for her culture and faith, on top of the feeling of liveliness and warmth. “If you’ve been to a tropical destination like the British Virgin Islands, you would know what I’m talking about. Many people from the Caribbean love to use vibrant colors to express themselves,” the Artist shared.

Being the youngest of five girls with two younger brothers in her family, Osowo shares that she had always be given the freedom do the things that she loves, like trying different hobbies, and later moving to America when she was just sixteen years old, “I’m blessed that my mom  always gave me the freedom to express myself creatively through painting, music and eventually moving to a different country,” Osowo shared, “I think freedom is also a major element in my art. Although abstract art often appears much easier to create than it actually is, it requires you to trust yourself and your own intuition once you understand the principles of what makes strong work.”

Some of her biggest advice for emerging artists includes, “Always do what feels the most authentic to you,” the Artist shared, “A lot of artists struggle to find their ‘style or artistic voice. As an emerging artist myself, I’d like to tell others that ‘style’ is a curation of the things you love. When you see people that have a very aesthetic to their work, they’re very aware of what they love, and that takes time. It’s a process. Just do what you’d like to create in the meantime. Avoid comparing yourself to others and be grateful for what you have right now.” Osowo believes in the strength of everyone’s journey, “Don’t let comparison block you from reaching your full potential in whatever stage you’re in.”

Her work has been sold both nationally and internationally, and has been licensed and carried in Home Goods, as well as with other brands including Erin Condren and Lemonade Puzzles. Roma is currently represented by the Liz Lidgett Gallery  in Des Moines, Iowa and carried by Park + Eighth, a vintage decor and original art store in Fort Worth, Texas.  Her work is also available to purchase and see through her website.
