Siol Studio Redesigns 1920’s Single Storey Dwelling for a SF Family

The Genesee project is being designed for a San Francisco couple- Sonya Yu and Zack Lara with 2 children by Siol Studios. The 1920’s dwelling encompasses 1,848 sq. ft. area in the city’s Sunset Square neighbourhood and is being designed in contemporary elements while maintaining its historical character.

The couple wanted to retain the home’s charm and Siol studio was asked to update the fittings according to their taste. They wanted to create a subtle freshness and a delicateness of space created by sculptural forms melding together. Some elements were kept in place while some parts of the interior were reconfigured. In the spacious living room the home’s original arched windows and doorways are on full display.

The Kitchen with Spanish tiles has been relocated to the rear of the house. A folding glass door has been installed providing a seamless connection to the backyard. Kitchen also has an unusual element of a bronze partition emerging with a bar made of ash. It is intended to be scuffed, marked by time & use leaving imprints of the body moving, cooking and tasting. A pink banquette is wrapped on the wooden dining table with angles legs in the breakfast nook. A marble top table surrounded by light toned chairs sits pretty in the dining room.

A collection of vibrant surfboards by artist Barry McGee has been placed in one corner of the house. Whereas the focal point of the living room is a plexus glass coffee table by Nicole Werners containing many different coloured and shaped boulders. Entry way to the master suite has been illuminated by James Turrell installation. Gauzy drapes have been added to the covered walls in the master bedroom to give a softness to the space. The children room has a bunk bed from Ducduc and the wallpaper has cactus pattern.
