The researchers from the University of New Mexico have come up with what they believe could be a way to curb the Alzheimer’s disease, as per a report by a local media.

According to a KRQE report, Kiran Bhaskar, the Health and Sciences associate professor at the varsity has continually been studying Alzheimer’s disease since nearly 10 years. The idea to develop a vaccine stuck Bhaskar during the year 2013. He along with his team then began to test the vaccine on a group of mice which have the disease. They injected the mice over a series of injections, said Nicole Maphis, a PhD student at the university.

Maphis said that they developed the vaccine to curb pathological tau, which is a protein majorly found in the brains of the patients having Alzheimer’s disease. The antibodies appear to have combated the pathological tau, Maphis added.

As per Maphis, mice which received the vaccine showed better results during maze-like tests in contrast to those who did not receive.

The test isn’t a perfect indicator showing the vaccine is a cure. Bhaskar and Maphis are searching for partnerships in order to conduct clinical test of the new vaccine on a tiny group, reported the KRQE. The test would cost around $2mn to the department.
