How to Save Money on Electric Vehicle Maintenance

For the average American, maintaining a vehicle comes with its own set of costs. If you’re using your four-wheeler every day, the question you should be asking yourself is whether your earnings are enough to maintain a car.

According to statistics, the average cost of automotive repair is around $500 to $1,000, although it depends on the type of vehicle you have. To reduce maintenance costs, get your vehicle insured. Having a coverage plan will help you deal with unexpected costs that come with owning a vehicle, such as accidental damage or theft.

Looking at any CarShield review, you have an auto insurance provider that is one of the best in the market. With long-term auto coverage, you can save a few bucks and secure your car against unwanted hazards. Factoring in your car’s mileage, model, and make, you can choose an auto warranty best suited for your budget.

Electric Vehicles Are Easier to Maintain Compared to Conventional Vehicles

Taking care of a gasoline-powered vehicle is always going to cost you more. In contrast, a plug-in hybrid car or EV will cut down on your fuel expenses tenfold.

To address global warming concerns, golf cart rentals have initiated the use of electric and solar-powered vehicles. Since EVs are more energy-efficient and need less maintenance, they are an ideal alternative to fuel-dependent cars. According to studies, the growth of EVs will cross a markup of $2 billion by 2026.

Electric vehicles don’t have all the components specific to traditional petrol-powered engines. These include transmissions, exhausts, radiators, and more. As a result, the cost of maintaining an EV decreases significantly.

Some electric cars sport a regenerative braking system that reduces ablation on the brake pads and rotors, further decreasing maintenance costs. Even with a plug-in hybrid, the internal combustion engine is easier to maintain. The engine uses less gasoline and requires less oiling and lubrication.

How to Save on Your EV’s Maintenance Costs

Whether you want to reduce carbon emissions or are looking for fuel efficiency, EVs are a better choice than petrol-driven cars. Statistics show that plug-in hybrids use anywhere between 30 to 60 percent less petrol than conventional vehicles.

If you already own an electric model or a hybrid EV, here are ways you can reduce maintenance costs.

Preserve the Battery

Keep in mind that EVs use advanced batteries that can be charged for a limited period. In this case, always check with your dealer if the vehicle comes with a battery recycling policy. This ensures you don’t need to buy a whole new battery for your car.

The advanced batteries used in EVs are durable in design and meant to last for the expected life cycle of the car. But they will wear out over time. Automotive battery systems contain liquid coolants, and the temperature requires consistent maintenance. For this reason, you should get your battery checked to ensure safe operation.

Battery type also differs from vehicle to vehicle. Some batteries are prone to catching fire. Ensure you park your car in a place that’s away from flammable items. You should also keep your battery’s state of charge anywhere between 20 to 80 percent. This is because when you repeatedly charge the battery to full and don’t use it, the battery’s condition will degrade faster.

Install Energy-efficient Models

Combining solar-powered panels with electric cars, both of which you can maintain for years to come, is smart and eco-friendly.

To maximize your electric car savings, generate your own power at home. You can do this by installing rooftop solar panels to reduce the cost of charging your vehicle and limit fossil fuel consumption.

Solar panels are a good replacement for the more expensive gasoline besides grid electricity. Such systems can help you save up to 10 to 30 percent of your consumption in a year, giving you free electricity to charge your vehicle.

Follow the Basic Rules

Even electric vehicles need care and handling. For one, don’t leave your EV parked under the sun or the cold outside for an extended period. This is an important practice to preserve the battery life and guard it against extreme temperatures.

Do a visual check on the wires and switches for short-circuiting after heavy rainfall. You should also inspect the windshield wiper fluid and the brake fluid for proper lubrication. Lubrication preserves the moving parts against friction and increases their longevity.

Another way to reduce your maintenance costs is by keeping the EV either in sleep mode or shutdown mode. Like any electrical device, the system switches off the vehicle and stops the battery from getting drained.

Conclusion

If you want to save the planet, an electric vehicle is cost-effective and environment-friendly. Depending on the vehicle’s charging capacity, you can power up the car’s battery as needed. According to a study, consumers who own an electric car can save up to $4,600 in maintenance costs compared to what they’d pay for a gasoline-powered vehicle over a lifetime.

With a few tweaks and some care, your electric vehicle will prove to be a valuable investment that’s easy to maintain and maneuver.
