Adam Esposito was eager to share with us 4 Incredibly Useful Tips for Logo Design. Here are 4 practical and easy-to-follow tactics that you can use right now to increase your design skills and gain exposure to your small business.
1. Choosing The Right Colors
Choosing the appropriate colors is the first step to any quality logo design. Always do your research to find the perfect color palette – choose one that matches your overall brand identity. Keep in mind, when designing with color, the overall goal should be to evoke a certain emotion from your targeted audience. Having the right color scheme will make a huge impact in gaining the attention of your audience.
To make your design pop, use high contrasting color palettes. Try to keep the number of colors in your design to less than four, doing so can make your designs simple and timeless. Adding color is often a beautiful touch, but sometimes it’s best to stick with a simple monochromatic color scheme depending on the logo you are designing.
If you are having trouble finding the perfect colors for your design there are many free resources available for you to use. My personal favorite is Adobe Color CC, it’s a great resource you can use to browse through countless color options.
2. Using The Right Font
Quite often clients come to me with a specific font they would like to incorporate into the logo design and I have to steer them in a different direction. This can be very challenging sometimes when dealing with customers that are stuck on one specific font. Before jumping into what the client wants, I stop and educate them about the benefits of choosing the right font. The main goal when choosing the font needs to be Legibility and nothing more.
Just because you like a specific font doesn’t mean everyone else feels the same way. Give your client options, get feedback and test your audience before coming to a final decision. If you have to use more than one font, it’s always best to choose fonts that are from the same font family.
There are many free resources for finding the perfect font to use in your design. My personal favorite is Dafont – I use this site frequently to gain inspiration for my logo designs. Be careful when finding fonts online, always make sure you own the licensing rights to use the font before you put it into production.
3. Using Guides To Align Your Design
Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop both have easy-to-use align and guide options to help you place your elements perfectly. Don’t skip this step – it’s crucial in making your design professional and easy on the eyes.
If you don’t use Adobe suite, become familiar with the align options for your specific design software. I highly recommend watching tutorials online on different tips and tricks for using guides and align options. These tools can save you a long time and make an enormous impact on the overall feel and look in your design.
4. The Impact of Using White Space
Using white space is a simple yet powerful tactic to showcase simplicity in your designs by focusing on a single element. Many popular companies, including Apple, are known for their professional use of white space.
Whenever possible always keep your background elements simple in style. Backgrounds can often cause unnecessary noise and take away from your graphic elements and illustrations. Remain consistent when framing your design to the background. Use the guides to help you align them perfectly and don’t be afraid to use white space.
