St. Petersburg Marine Technical University presented industrial additive manufacturing  equipment and metal samples obtained by direct laser deposition technology.

According to the University press service, the delegation was headed by the director of the Institute of Laser and Welding Technologies (ILWT) and SMTU Rector Gleb Turichin, who directs research and development work on the industrial additive manufacturing equipment development.

The SMTU development is based on the direct laser deposition technology — sintering of metal powders sprayed by the protective gas flow. The delegation demonstrated the innovative equipment online, gave comments on the features and specifics of the additive technologies application, as well as negotiated with potential partner universities.

“The exhibition opens up new markets for our equipment and technologies and gives an opportunity to ensure the equipment delivery not only to Germany but also to other countries. The exhibition in Frankfurt attracts experts from all over the world interested in innovations in laser and additive technologies. We are establishing mutually beneficial relations with European universities, which will be a basis for scientific cooperation and allow to organize new student exchange programs. We also expect to know about our foreign colleagues’ latest developments in order to determine whether we can use, modify, improve and implement them in our developments. Turkish and German universities are very interested in the ILWT equipment,” said Gleb Turichin.

In addition to the additive manufacturing equipment SMTU presented prototypes, such as a propulsion-steering column propeller screw, blank of an aircraft engine outer ring, the demonstrators of aircraft engine inlet and swivel spacer. Last year, one of the machines was put into trial operation at JSC Kuznetsov, a member of the United engine Corporation (UEC). Interested in 3D printers but don’t know where to start? Check out this guide, it’ll help you get the machine you need.
