Dr. Pickett, your career blends veterinary medicine and business leadership. Can you share how you began this journey and what motivates you to continue innovating in the field?
My journey began with a deep passion for pets and a desire to make a real difference in their lives, naturally leading me to veterinary medicine. But early on, I realized that clinical care alone wasn’t enough — the way we deliver care, educate clients, and run our practices had just as much impact on outcomes. That insight sparked my interest in business and leadership.
I started getting involved in hospital operations, team development, and eventually broader strategic roles. I saw how strong leadership and innovative thinking could improve not just individual patient care, but entire systems — from client communication to preventive care adoption.
What motivates me today is the opportunity to keep challenging the status quo — whether it’s integrating new technologies, improving access to care, or helping teams work more effectively. I love bridging science with strategy and creating solutions that elevate the profession, the practice, and the pet-parent experience.
As CEO of Pet Hospitals, you lead with both compassion and strategic innovation. How do you balance these two aspects in your day-to-day leadership?
For me, compassion and strategic innovation aren’t opposing forces — they’re deeply connected. Compassion drives our mission: we’re here to serve pets, their families, and our teams. That empathy shapes how I make decisions, how I listen, and how I lead through change. At the same time, innovation ensures we’re delivering on that mission in smarter, more sustainable ways — improving care delivery, adopting new technologies, or creating better experiences for clients and staff.
Balancing the two means being present and accessible to my teams, while also staying focused on long-term vision and measurable impact. I prioritize empathy in daily interactions — from how we handle client feedback to supporting a team member going through burnout — but I also challenge our organization to evolve, to question outdated systems, and to continually raise the standard. That blend allows us to lead with heart while moving the industry forward.
You’ve focused on improving patient care through operational efficiency, including telehealth platforms. How has this approach changed the way veterinary care is delivered at your Pet Hospitals?
Improving patient care through operational efficiency has been a game-changer — not just for our workflows but for the entire client and patient experience. By introducing platforms like telehealth, we’ve extended our reach beyond the four walls of the hospital. Clients can access timely guidance, follow-ups, and preventive care support without waiting for an in-person visit, improving continuity of care and compliance.
Operationally, telehealth has helped us triage more effectively, allocate resources smarter, and reduce unnecessary in-clinic traffic, which became especially critical during the pandemic, but continues to be valuable today. It’s allowed our teams to focus more on high-touch, in-person cases while supporting everyday health questions and concerns virtually.
Ultimately, this approach has made care more accessible, efficient, and client—friendly while also giving our teams more tools to practice at the top of their licenses. It’s a win for the business, the team, and most importantly, the pets and their families.
Making veterinary care accessible and cost-effective is a cornerstone of your work. What initiatives have you implemented to achieve this goal?
Making veterinary care more accessible and cost-effective has been a key focus of my leadership. One of the most impactful initiatives I’ve implemented is the introduction of tiered wellness membership plans. These plans make preventive care predictable and affordable for pet owners while also improving compliance with things like vaccines, parasite prevention, and routine diagnostics—which leads to better long-term outcomes.
In parallel, we’ve optimized scheduling and resource allocation using technology, such as implementing teletriage and streamlined appointment types, which reduced bottlenecks and allowed us to serve more clients without compromising care quality. We’ve also trained our client service teams to communicate value clearly and confidently, helping pet parents make informed decisions without feeling overwhelmed.
The result has been increased retention, better patient outcomes, and a stronger bond of trust between our teams and the communities we serve — because accessibility isn’t just about price, it’s about creating systems that meet people where they are.
With your experience and expertise, what trends or innovations do you foresee shaping the future of veterinary medicine in the coming years?
I see several key trends shaping the future of veterinary medicine, and they’re all centered around improving access, efficiency, and personalization. First, the continued rise of telemedicine and hybrid care models will be a significant force. They allow practices to extend care beyond the clinic, improve follow-up compliance, and support clients in a more flexible, client-centric way.
Second, I believe diagnostics will become even more predictive and preventive, with AI-enhanced tools, in-clinic diagnostics, and remote monitoring creating earlier intervention opportunities. We’re moving from reactive to proactive care, and that shift will fundamentally change how we support long-term health.
Lastly, I see the integration of veterinary care with retail, wellness, and insurance evolving rapidly. As clients look for more holistic, streamlined experiences, practices that can deliver continuity across those domains will have a major advantage. My focus is on helping teams and businesses stay agile and adopt innovations that truly elevate the standard of care while staying grounded in empathy and client trust.
