Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are staples in most American homes. The industry’s market size is estimated at USD$ 120 billion, and some 118,636 businesses of this nature employ at least 566,869 workers. (1)

The HVAC sector continues to rise alongside the growth of the construction industry, with a noticeable increase in commercial contracts. This is great news for anyone working in this sector and presents considerable economic opportunity if you are considering launching your own company.

If you’re contemplating taking the first step to becoming an entrepreneur, consider this comprehensive guide on how to prepare for and what to do to start your HVAC business.

  • Identify what you need

Before knowing what you will need to set up your new business, you will need to conduct your own market research to determine the demand for HVAC services in your locality, and exactly who your target market will be. This will inform you of the type of HVAC services needed in your area of operation, so you can tailor your services to meet this requirement.

The question then arises regarding how you will raise the start-up capital to begin servicing this need. Depending on your initial material and equipment requirements, don’t forget to consider how you are going to market your services so that people know to come to you. These factors plus initial operational costs can range from as low as USD$2,000 to as high as USD$100,000 depending on the scope of what you are doing. (2)

Business management software can be a significant asset even at the start-up phase to ensure that internal processes and systems are well organized and that the company can scale with ease. An example of such a worthwhile investment would be Jobber, an all-in-one application which has been developed specifically to serve the HVAC niche.

  • Write a business plan

Estimates reveal that HVAC owners can earn a median pay of USD$ 54,625 annually or USD$ 4,552 monthly. On the other hand, technicians receive an average of USD$48,630 per year. Pay varies wildly depending on the skills or expertise and location. (3)

There’s no right or wrong way to create your business plan. The following sections are the most crucial:

  • Executive summary, which expounds on your business idea, your mission, and an overview of each of the sections of the plan
  • Service (or product) information that explains how clients can benefit from your offers
  • Company profile, stating your business structure and strengths, including the pain point(s) you aim to address
  • Market analysis, explaining how your niche industry works and how your business can offer added value to your consumers
  • Management structure, providing readers with an idea on how your company is going to be managed
  • Marketing and sales plan, underlining your promotional activities, whether paid or unpaid, to attract and retain clients
  • A financial plan stating your cost projections and expounding how your business will make money from the services you offer. A balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow table or forecast must be included. An HVAC estimate template is also essential to know how much revenue you expect and to make invoicing a breeze. (4)

After identifying your funding strategies in the plan, it’s time to take action and raise the capital needed to run your business.

  • Obtain the necessary permits and accreditations

Check the local, state, and federal rules applicable to your HVAC business. Most territories require training and certifications from HVAC technicians depending on the level of skills and services offered. (2)

At this point, it’s also necessary to obtain business documents such as permits and insurance. Register your business before the local business bureau and get an employer identification number or EIN, your federal tax identification.

  •  Market your business

Now that you have the legal documents to launch your HVAC company, it’s time to spread the word about your business. A brilliant service or groundbreaking product is useless if consumers don’t know anything. Thus, marketing and promotional activities are crucial to your startup’s success. Consider hiring a digital marketing agency for more successful strategies if you have the cash to spend.

If you want to save on costs, you can do it on your own by employing both traditional and digital marketing strategies. Expand online presence and exposure by creating a company website and company social media accounts, incorporating search engine optimization (SEO) techniques in your online content, and subscribing to paid online advertisements.

Complement this strategy by publishing an ad on traditional mass media channels. Ask your friends and family members to spread the word. Your staff can distribute flyers, call potential clients, and leave business cards in particular establishments.

  • Build your staff and system

Using business software is crucial in providing efficient service and enhancing team members’ and clients’ experiences. Complete software that’s easy to use and scalable must be a priority for HVAC companies, as both employees and customers rely on it for a seamless transaction.

Apart from essential business tools, HVAC companies rely primarily on the workforce to keep their enterprise going. That said, hiring the right staff should be a priority. Choose candidates who have the soft and hard skills needed.

By choosing the right software and staff, you’ll be able to run more efficiently and provide the best services.

Wrap Up

Getting familiar with the industry is one of the most critical weapons you can have in starting any business. So, make sure you’ve gathered enough information about the sector to plan how to gain a foothold in the market.

Once you have all the resources in place, always find ways to improve so you can run your business with fewer challenges, better services, and happier customers.
