Millions of CVs are being circulated across the globe daily. But, what can you do to make your CV surpass the expectation of the recruiter? What can help you write an impactful and effective CV? Here are some essential guidelines and tips to write an effective CV:

  • Use active verbs wherever possible: You should add words like developed, created, assessed, and devised to showcase yourself as a person who takes the initiative.
  • A good resume should not have any grammatical or spelling errors: Make sure you use a grammar checker and spelling checker to ensure your document is error-proof.
  • Do not use general and over-used phrases such as hardworking, dedicated, and multi-tasker. Instead, use real-life examples to showcase these skills.
  • Customize your resume: Check out the company’s website and social media profiles and see their recent updates and job requirements. Make sure your CV is targeted according to the role and their preference.
  • Choose a preferable CV type according to the circumstances: Choose between functional, chronological, or combination. Find out what’s right for you and use the format.
  • Use a professional email address: If your email address sounds very personal, it should not be used for a professional purpose.
  • Do not exaggerate or lie on your resume: Exaggerating or lying about your qualifications and skillsets showcases your dishonesty to a prospective employer. Altering your degree grade is marked as a degree fraud and can lead to a prison sentence.
  • Make sure you add a cover letter unless the employer mentions anything specifically. It customizes your application and helps to seek the attention of the recruiter.

The first is to know that Covid-19 interfered with the careers of millions of students and workers, so you’re not alone. So, whatever internship, course, experience, and the job you were doing must have been canceled or postponed. If this worries you, then ensure the gap is not worth distressing.

Employers are well aware of the challenges faced by everyone during the lockdown. Hence, they won’t consider the time. However, other than this, you should present yourself as a proactive, resilient, and hardworking applicant.

You can add information:

  • About any online course that you have taken or if you have been a part of webinars.
  • If you have acquired any new skill during the lockdown, such as learning a new language or coding.
  • If you have volunteered for work such as caring for elderly people or shopping for vulnerable relatives or neighbors.
  • If you have done any charity work such as fundraising.
  • If you have taken up any new hobby such as cooking, vlogging, or any new sports.

Though these things may not be related to your job, you can surely add them in the relevant sections. It will showcase that even during the lockdown, you did not sit idle and worked on things of your preference.
