Marcia Smith, Founder of Life Changing Academy (LCA), started a business for her daughter when her daughter was just 15: A new 2021 C300 Mercedes Benz listed on Turo (the AirBnB for cars). Smith also put her daughter’s name on five of her credit cards. The revenue from the Turo listing pays for the car and the rest is used to invest in stocks, crypto and save with the goal of building an investment portfolio and building up a college fund to ensure her daughter would not be subjected to student loan debt when going to college.

What Smith did for her daughter was teaching her how to stand on her own two feet as early as possible, rather than hand her the funds with hopes she would know how to manage them. Smith is ensuring by starting early, her daughter will know how to keep them and make them continue to grow. What’s the phrase? ‘You can teach a man to fish…’
The Beginnings of A Life Changing Experience
Smith posted this story to her Facebook page, which generated her thousands of supporters and followers because what she did was clever, thoughtful, and inspiring to so many others. She ended up creating a Facebook group which grew to 41K followers in less than a week.
Facebook users flocked to her for financial advice, both for their children’s futures and, quite frankly, for themselves.
“The American educational system teaches you math, but it doesn’t teach you the most basic financial knowledge most people need to change their life,” said Smith. “I have a problem with that. It’s not the teachers’ faults, it’s the system’s, so I decided to become the teacher.”
She started on Facebook, tutoring her peers and creating a great network of people who wanted to better their financial health. Before she knew it, the momentum that first post gained was building on itself and coming to a head. So she created Life Changing Academy.
What Financial Freedom is Not
Smith sheds light onto something that should be common knowledge but somehow seems complicated to many in her Life Changing Academy program. Financial freedom is not scrimping and saving, nor is it living paycheck to paycheck. It is not borrowing money and not being able to pay it back, nor is it asking your friends to foot the bill more often than not.
