There are many influences that plastic surgeon Nneamaka “Dr. Amaka” Nwubah attributes to her success in life.

She credits her willpower, determination and, of course, God, she said. She also credits what she recalls as an encouraging upbringing with parents who believed in her.

The board-certified plastic surgeon for Maxwell Aesthetics in Nashville, Tennessee spent 16 years studying, researching and training in her field before she acquired the accomplished reputation she has for her work. She has earned more than 15 awards and other recognitions throughout her career, ranging from grants for research to honors for her writing.

But outside of the medical office, Dr. Amaka is also making a name for herself online.

Since starting her social media presence on Instagram under the username @dr_amakamd, she has gained more than 58,000 followers who check in with her regarding her work as a plastic surgeon as well as her other interests, including supplement advice and cooking.

Recently, Dr. Amaka started a second Instagram account, @cutupandcook, that focuses solely on her cooking, recipes and her love for those areas.

The wife and mother of two admits she was nervous about opening the door to digital media influencing, but she knew the work she would put into growing her presence online would pay off in the end.

“Most people find me on social media and on Google,” said Dr. Amaka. “Without it, I would not be nearly as busy as I am now. Marketing is so important, especially now.”

Followers to her Instagram accounts are treated to posts that represent the very characteristics that make Dr. Amaka both professional and approachable. She highlights her work as a plastic surgeon, promotes her successful e-cookbook she has created, talks about supplements and other ways of sustaining a healthy lifestyle, and delivers an upbeat personality that helps show her personal side.

Perhaps one of the most evident characteristics that is easy to identify in Dr. Amaka’s social media posts is that of compassion and a willingness to help those in the global community. She uses her growing following on social media as an outreach effort to help others by building their confidence and supporting them, especially young women she mentors.

In a recent Instagram post, Dr. Amaka offered the following advice: “The things that terrify you the most are the things that are going to bless you the most. Who are you allowing to be the author and editor of your story?”

Dr. Amaka said mentoring is a crucial part in helping others grow both professionally and personally. She credits her own mentors, who she said were instrumental in helping her along the way, from the time she spent in school and even now during her successful career as a plastic surgeon.
“My main mentors are plastic surgeons who I did my training with, as well as individuals who helped change my hesitant mindset,” she said. “They are those who inspired me to be the best version of myself and use all of my talents.”
