Well, he has done that and much more. “A Summer in Doubt” is destined to be a classic for years to come, if you are looking for an electrifying adventure then this is the book for you. We had the opportunity to chat with Dex Winchester, this is what he shared with us.
“A Summer in Doubt” recently became a bestseller, which for those of us who have read this amazing book it was not a surprise. What was achieving this level of success with your first book like for you?
When you write a book, naturally you feel it’s pretty good. You put all of this time and effort into building solid characters and hopefully writing a captivating storyline. Despite you believing in your tale, it’s always nice to have validation from readers. After all, the readers are the people that matter most. The bestseller achievement is still very new, and I’m not one that gets caught up in my successes. I would say it feels nice.
Every book has a story about its creation, what’s the story behind “A Summer in Doubt”?
I really only had one goal, and that was to write a book. The story doesn’t have any one particular genesis. At one point, I was going to become a teacher, and my student teaching assignment was in sixth grade. I ended up reading a number of young adult novels. They were generally fun stories. I came up with a storyline that intrigued me and put pen to paper, so to speak.
Fergie is an amazing character, adding so much to this story. What or who was the inspiration for this character?
Fergie is every elderly person that desires to share the wisdom they’ve accumulated over the years. I tried to take that and add an element of cool to him. I’m hoping he’s a fan favorite, because he’s undoubtedly my favorite.
While writing this book did you learn anything new about yourself?
I’m sure I learned a lot about myself writing this book. A very important lesson learned was not to force things. I only write when my thoughts are flowing freely. When the writing is forced, I go back and read it, and think wow this isn’t great. It definitely takes longer to pen a book in this fashion, but I am happy with the story when it’s done
Clearly “A Summer in Doubt” was a huge hit with readers. Is there a new book on the horizon for you?
I’m writing another book now. It’s very much a work in progress. I’m trying to tame/streamline so many different thoughts and possible directions in which the book could go. I’ll get it under control sooner or later here. It’s not a young adult novel though. I hope to figure out where it belongs in the literary world as I go.
