Apple podcasts feature over 500,000 monthly active channels and over 43 million episodes. What used to be an ocean for the taking has now become saturated and difficult to distinguish yourself, but in less than a year since Jayson Waller launched his True Underdog podcast, his show has reached the famed spot of being a top 5 Apple podcast.
Waller, the CEO of POWERHOME SOLAR, is an American entrepreneur who first started in the home security industry before moving into solar in 2014. He has successfully scaled three businesses, and won several acclaimed awards including EY Entrepreneur of the Year Southeast (Emerging Services category) in 2019. In 2020, Waller’s company did $360M in revenue with a run rate of $700 million.
I have the pleasure of interviewing Jayson about his entrepreneur podcast:
What’s your secret to success?
“The secret to my success is hard work. I don’t ever let anyone outwork me. ‘Hustle until your haters ask if you’re hiring.’ I love that line, it fits me.”
How does it feel having a top 5 Apple podcast? Was it a goal for a long time?
“My goal is to succeed in everything I do, and it’s gratifying to have listeners that find value in my story and in the guests I bring on. I’ve always said that if I can change just one person’s life or make a difference for one person, then it’s worth it. That I’m helping more people is even better. I love motivating others to become the best versions of themselves.”
Why did you name the podcast True Underdog?
“I’ve always been an underdog in life, expected to lose. And for those who don’t know my story — being kicked out of high school multiple times, had a baby with my girlfriend-now-wife in my teens, never went to college — the deck was stacked against me, but I always found a way to succeed. That’s the definition of a true underdog.”
What are your future plans for the podcast?
“A top 5 podcast is great, but the goal is always being the best in everything I do. I’m pushing to be No. 1, and will continue on that path.”
