How Motorcyclists Can Mitigate Risk in the Age of Distracted Driving

Riding a motorcycle on the open country roads can be an incredible experience. However, you need to remember that it only takes one misstep for a distracted driver to bring your riding days to an end. Statistics from Traffic Safety Marketing show that motorcyclists recorded 15% of all fatal accidents in 2022. This is because motorcycles, unlike cars, don’t have any exterior protection. As a result, all accidents in high-speed situations tend to turn deadly. The following is a look at three safety tips every rider should master.

1. Select the Right Motorcycle

As you look into how to avoid injury while riding, you also need to consult widely on choosing the right bike. It’s the only way to avoid going for the first bike that crosses your path. Research each model to check for special features such as the availability of an automatic clutch and shift. Other features to consider include traction control and stability.

After settling on your preferred model, the next step will be to learn everything there’s to learn about it. This will include knowing its current condition and any problems it may have. Remember, each motorbike is unique, so set aside time to familiarize yourself with its operations. Whenever possible, take it out for leisurely rides to memorize the location of its buttons and switches. This may come in handy when engaging in high-speed rides.

2. Prepare a Pre-Ride Checklist

Before getting into the checklist, there’s the small issue of checking the weather. Looking at the history of personal injury settlements, you’ll notice that many factors can cause these accidents. This is precisely why every rider should ensure they recheck the weather before going on a ride.

Rain, ice, and snow can cause reduced visibility, thus compromising your safety. While checking the weather, be sure to go through your pre-ride checklist. A thorough checklist can also save your life and help avoid unnecessary breakdowns. Experienced riders recommend giving your bike a detailed examination to confirm everything works. If you notice that something isn’t right, have it fixed.

3. Focus on the Driver, Not the Car

The trick to becoming a good rider is understanding that a car can’t tell you much about the awareness of its driver. On the other hand, observing the actions of its driver might let you learn what they want to do. For example, if they begin checking the right-hand mirror, it means one of two things will happen. They might make a right-hand turn or merge to the right lane. Knowing this can help prevent a motorcycle accident. However, in the event that you find yourself in one, you may want to know how to go about hiring a lawyer.

Endnote

Motorcycles are less than registered vehicles, but account for nearly 15% of all traffic fatalities. These figures show why every rider needs to learn how to choose the right bike and prepare a pre-ride checklist. It’s also recommended that you learn to observe the actions of other drivers to help prevent accidents. If you ever find yourself needing legal help for motorcycle riders, don’t hesitate to call an attorney.
