Belle Burden: Attorney, Author, and the Voice Behind One of 2026’s Most Talked-About Memoirs

What was the toughest decision you had to make in the last few months, and what was the outcome? Would you do anything differently today?

Hiring decisions in a competitive labor market have been particularly tough. Balancing the need for highly skilled talent with budget constraints required difficult prioritization. Ultimately, I chose to invest in quality over quantity, which has paid off with better project outcomes. In hindsight, I’d focus even earlier on strengthening internal processes to make the onboarding and retention of new hires more seamless.

Tell us about a skill you taught yourself. How did you go about learning it?

I taught myself to be a licensed pilot and instructor, which was both challenging and rewarding. I approached it with disciplined study, hands-on practice, and guidance from experienced mentors. The process reinforced the value of continuous learning and applying theoretical knowledge in practical settings.

What is the one book that you recommend everyone should read, and why?

I recommend “Your Next Five Moves” by Patrick Bet-David. This book teaches the importance of thinking strategically, planning ahead, and making decisions aligned with long-term goals. It’s a must-read for anyone who wants to achieve clarity, focus, and success in their personal and professional lives.

What was the worst job you ever had, and what did you learn from it?

In high school, I had a job delivering donuts. I had to wake up at 5:00 AM every morning, pick up donuts from the bakeries, and deliver them to convenience stores. While I didn’t enjoy the early mornings, this job had valuable lessons. It taught me the importance of starting the day productively, staying disciplined, and being consistent. It also motivated me to work harder toward finding a career I’m passionate about.

What people in your life or career have had the greatest impact on you, and how?

I’ve been fortunate to meet incredible people in my life, many from the aviation industry. My first flight instructor, who helped me earn my license and is now a dear friend, made a lasting impact on me. Another flight instructor, who helped further my education and training, also played a significant role. Both men taught me the value of hard work, dedication, and commitment to my craft as a pilot, while also inspiring me to become a better person overall.

What do you think it is that makes you successful?

Success comes from a combination of discipline, vision, and adaptability. Staying ahead of challenges, thinking five moves ahead, and remaining focused on the big picture while addressing daily details are key.

What does your typical day look like, and how do you make it productive?

My day starts at 6:00 AM with checking emails to ensure I’m up to speed with ongoing projects and priorities. I follow this with a workout at the gym to stay physically and mentally sharp. My work focuses on developing mobile home parks and tiny home communities, so I dedicate my day to solving the affordable housing crisis. Productivity comes from clear prioritization, consistent routines, and staying proactive in addressing challenges.

How do you stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies?

I stay informed by networking with industry professionals, attending conferences, and reading publications focused on real estate development and construction. Additionally, I follow thought leaders in affordable housing and related fields to keep up with trends in urban planning, sustainable living, and innovative housing solutions.

Can you recall a significant challenge or failure you faced and how you overcame it?

One of the biggest challenges is navigating labor shortages in the construction industry. To overcome this, we’ve had to get creative in hiring strategies, such as seeking out untapped talent pools and offering competitive incentives. This adaptability has helped us secure the talent needed to move projects forward despite these hurdles.

What is your approach to starting a new project?

I approach every new project with thorough research and planning. This starts with a clear understanding of the community’s needs, followed by assembling a skilled team. I prioritize setting clear goals, identifying potential risks, and ensuring there’s a solid roadmap for execution. I believe in starting strong with detailed groundwork to avoid missteps later on.

Pilkey’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the impact of strategic thinking. Through his innovative approach to real estate development and his commitment to community, Pilkey continues to make strides in addressing the housing needs of today.

Exploring the Expertise and Vision of Pilkey in Real Estate Development

Can you describe your approach to addressing the affordable housing crisis, and what innovations have you introduced into the market?

My approach centers around transforming existing mobile and RV parks into tiny home communities. This model not only optimizes underutilized spaces but also provides sustainable, affordable housing options. By focusing on community-oriented designs, we’re able to create environments that promote stability and opportunity. Innovations include modular construction techniques and eco-friendly materials, which reduce building costs and environmental impact.

What achievement in your career are you most proud of, and how did it come about?

One of my proudest achievements is successfully developing a community that offered over 300 affordable housing units. It was a multifaceted challenge that required aligning various stakeholders, including local government and non-profit organizations. This project not only provided much-needed housing but also revitalized the local economy by creating jobs and stimulating investment.

What are some key trends you’re observing in the real estate development sector that you believe will shape its future?

We’re seeing a significant shift towards sustainable and community-focused developments. The demand for eco-friendly construction and energy-efficient homes is growing rapidly. Additionally, there’s an increasing focus on creating spaces that foster community interaction and provide essential services within walking distance. These trends are shaping a future where real estate development is more about building communities than just structures.

How has your background in aviation influenced your work in real estate development?

Aviation taught me the importance of precision, discipline, and a forward-thinking mindset. In both fields, attention to detail and strategic planning are crucial. The ability to anticipate potential challenges and make informed decisions has been invaluable in managing complex development projects. The aviation industry also introduced me to a network of professionals who have influenced my approach to leadership and innovation.

What vision do you have for the future of your company and your role in the real estate industry?

My vision is to continue expanding our footprint in the affordable housing sector, particularly through partnerships with local governments and community organizations. Long-term, I hope to influence policy changes that support sustainable housing development nationwide. I envision my role as a catalyst for change, advocating for innovative solutions that address housing shortages while promoting economic vitality.

What advice would you give to aspiring real estate developers looking to address the affordable housing issue?

Aspiring developers should focus on understanding the unique needs of their communities and leverage innovative solutions that align with those needs. It’s crucial to prioritize sustainability from the outset and engage with stakeholders early in the process. Networking with industry professionals and staying informed about technological advancements can also provide a competitive edge.

How do you measure success within your projects, and what benchmarks do you set?

Success is measured by the long-term impact of our projects on the community and the environment. Key benchmarks include project completion timelines, budget adherence, and the overall satisfaction of residents. Additionally, I pay close attention to the sustainability metrics of our developments, ensuring that they contribute positively to both the local ecosystem and the economic health of the area.

In what ways do you see technology transforming the real estate landscape, particularly in terms of construction and development?

Technology is revolutionizing construction with advancements like 3D printing, modular building, and smart home technologies. These innovations are making it possible to construct homes faster, more affordably, and with less waste. Additionally, digital platforms that facilitate virtual tours and real-time data analysis are enhancing the buying and leasing experiences for consumers.

Can you share a future project you’re excited about and what impact you hope it will have?

We’re currently in the planning stages of a new development that aims to create an integrated community with affordable tiny homes, shared public spaces, and access to essential services like healthcare and education. This project is designed to foster a self-sustaining ecosystem that not only provides housing but also enhances the quality of life for its residents. We’re excited about the potential ripple effects this could have in terms of economic growth and community cohesion.

Micah Pilkey has made a commitment to addressing the affordable housing crisis through innovative real estate solutions and continues to shape his approach to development and community building. His vision for sustainable, community-oriented projects positions him as a forward-thinking leader in the industry.
