The move to assisted living can represent a major change in a person’s life, especially if they need to downsize significantly or they’re having trouble with the idea of the move. When it’s time to move, there are some things that can make the transition a lot easier.

Find the Right Facility

The first step in getting into assisted living is to find the right facility. Take the time to tour different facilities and compare what they have to offer to find one that’s going to be a perfect fit.

Start Planning Ahead of Time

It’s important to start planning as early as possible. It can take time to get everything done and careful planning from the beginning can help the senior be involved and feel better about the idea of moving.

Begin Decluttering and Downsizing

It is crucial to begin thinking about downsizing as early as possible, as there may be a lot that needs to go. Get rid of any clutter in the home, then start thinking about what is still needed and what else can go.

Label Boxes and Pack

Make sure all boxes are carefully packed to prevent anything from breaking or being damaged. All boxes should be carefully labeled with what’s inside of it and the person’s name. If possible, also include their room number on the label so nothing gets lost.

Work With Movers

It is a good idea to work with movers, as they can handle heavy items with ease and will be able to make the process of moving a lot easier. Schedule movers as far in advance as possible to ensure help will be available when it’s needed.

Determine the Layout of the Room

As soon as it’s known which room the person will be in, it’s time to start looking at the room’s layout. Sketch the layout to begin thinking about what will fit in the room and where everything will go.

Make Sure All Important Documents are Together

All important documents should be in their own box that is moved in the vehicle instead of in a moving truck. This way, the documents are well organized and will be kept safe during the move to prevent potential issues.

Notify Others of Changing Address

Don’t forget to notify others about the change of address. There may be many people and companies that need to be notified during a move, from the post office to friends and family that may live far away.

Cancel Utilities and Other Services

Make sure that all utilities and other services at the old home are canceled unless they need to be on for a little while to facilitate a sale of the home. Along with electricity and water, consider lawn care, housekeeping services, and any other services.

Pack a Day One Bag

Be sure to pack a bag to bring in the car on the day of the move. This should include all of the essentials the person may need so that if there is any delay in getting their items, they will still be comfortable and have what they need.

If your loved one is going to move into assisted living, there are a number of things that can be done to create a smoother transition. Take the time to start as early as possible to help them through the move.
