Although AWP Wood Products isn’t a flooring company, they have unrivaled experience and expertise as a leader in custom millwork. Since its inception, the Little Rock-based lumber manufacturer and distributor has provided an industry-leading selection.

But AWP Wood Products’ mission doesn’t stop there. “Hardwood. Service. Solutions.” is featured prominently on their website. Although the company provides the highest-quality hardwood, plywood, and paneling, this is only part of what they offer. The brand is committed to its customers and vendors. It’s an embrace of old-school customer care. To extend its reach even further, the company has launched BuildProud. The website is an online catalog that exclusively serves the custom cabinetry industry.

But they also have the solutions you need too. In addition to unparalleled service and hardwood products, the company offers tips and advice too. They understand that hardwood floors are an investment. Protecting them long-term requires routine maintenance and regular care.

With this in mind, the experienced professionals at AWP Wood Products share four tips for protecting your new hardwood floors.

Reduce impact

Hardwood floors are durable and strong. While it can withstand normal wear and tear, repeated or rough use can be harmful. Minimize this damage by limiting traffic when possible. Children and their toys can be troublesome, but they aren’t the only problem. Pets can scar surfaces if nails aren’t trimmed short. Yet adults aren’t off the hook either. AWP Wood Products recommends adopting a “no shoes inside” policy. Rugs, runners, and mats are beneficial in high-traffic areas.

Routine cleaning

Nothing replaces regular cleaning. Dirt, debris, and small rocks are much more destructive than people realize. If left on the floor, they can be abrasive. Simply walking over dirt will grind it into your floors, acting as sandpaper. Start with daily sweeping using a microfiber dust mop. Vacuuming once a week is encouraged too. But, perhaps even more important, use only approved products designed for your specific flooring.

Remove moisture

Debris isn’t the only culprit. Liquids are also damaging. Often, the key to prolonging the life of hardwood floors is as simple as wiping away water and moisture. Clean up leaks and spills right away. Rain, snow, and pooling water, when tracked inside the house, will eat through a floor’s finish. Keep air conditioning and humidity controlled throughout the year. Be aware of your hardwood in winter, when it’s more likely to pull apart due to dryer air.

Restore as needed

Even the best-kept hardwood will eventually need to be refinished or replaced. Scratches and scuffs cause floors to look dull or worn. Resealing can resurrect your floor, giving it a new life. Just remove the existing damaged pieces before applying the new protective coat. Yet, as AWP Wood Products and BuildProud point out, replacing hardwood floors is the last resort but can prevent additional damage from occurring if done immediately. Luckily, they can supply the custom hardwood products you’ll need to get the job done.
