Interior design trends for 2022 combine a few timeless classics with sustainable materials and warm, comfortable designs. The last few years have maintained a similar vibe—one centered on self-reflection and creating a space that is inspired by who a person is and what makes them comfortable. Take a look at some of the design trends that are playing out in 2022.

A Bit of Vintage

One of the prominent trends this year is the addition of vintage looks and materials. That includes small things like antique décor and larger statement pieces, including vintage throws and carpeting. Furniture that’s simplistic and offers a 1950s feel is also in this year.

“People are pulling away from the use of big brand names,” says Teresa Fata, an interior designer with TF Interiors. “Instead, they’re seeking out lesser known or modern brands to bring a more personalized and intimate flavor to their home.”

Visit an estate sale or one of the antique stores nearby to find pieces that work for your space. While adding vintage furniture and decor to your space can enhance your style this year, don’t be afraid to mix it with modern elements. It’s this combination that really creates an impressive aesthetic.

Addition of Texture

Adding various texture to spaces is an important component of design, and this year, it’s being embraced in big ways. Look for opportunities to blend various fabric types, from linens to wools. Introduce wood to a space and then add some stone elements as well. Today, people long to be surrounded by comfort, which could mean a warm, soft blanket while sitting on a supportive, sturdier block-styled furniture. Layer the textures to play with your space in new and comfortable ways.

Natural Elements Are a Must

Plan to add natural elements into your home. There are many ways to do this, even if you don’t love plants. You can place wood pieces into your home, aiming for a more natural finish to them. Rustic and natural finished wood floors could be a great option. You can add big, bold windows that allow ample natural light into the space. Floor-to-ceiling windows are a great way to do this. Adding in some plants, perhaps even a small, wall-mounted herb garden, could provide easy-to-maintain greenery and nature into your home as well.

Accentuate Modern Lines with Curves

The addition of more curved lines to spaces is a great way to add visual interest and a dynamic quality. Choose subtle additions over big, bold curves and rounded areas to create a more comfortable, less edgy feel. The more geometric and angular your space, the more interesting and eye-catching it can be. You can achieve this in a number of ways. Switch out your rectangular light fixtures for round globes and lights. Add in round pillows and décor pieces to your living spaces, too. Add some oranges to the countertop or rounded handles on your cabinetry doors.

Color and Neutral

Color palettes are have shifted in 2022 designs. Styles are trending toward a move from stark whites to warm neutrals. This is a timeless, classic look because it allows you to easily add pops of color to draw the eye from one area to the next. Rust, camel, and beiges can be a fantastic way to create a soft, welcoming space in your home. Look to do this with a variety of elements in your space, such as seat coverings that have a warm taupe color to them and upholstery that features a more cream-colored look.

For those spaces where you want a pop of color, green in all its shades is the way to go. You can include a number of green hues in your living spaces, including accent walls or adding green to bedding. The more natural hues of green are preferred over bright colors this year. Accentuate the natural beauty of your space by blending greens and neutrals within the space. This opens the area and encourages socialization and relaxation.

Make Spaces Work for All of Your Needs

Another popular design trend for 2022 is the carryover of creating multifunctional spaces, areas of the home that can serve multiple purposes. Incorporate open floor plans that designate areas for a desk or office-like space which blends right into the living space. Add shelving to create storage and accentuate architectural detail. Make sure that every area you create has a functional aspect. Pretty spaces are only as important as their functionality.

Take advantage of the latest trends to refresh your home and bring in your personality and style. Your space going into 2023 should exude you and bring an updated, modern take to your space that is enjoyable, comfortable, and functional for you and your family.
