Tips on Choosing Memory Care Homes in New Jersey

Memory care homes in New Jersey as well as around the world vary in terms of costs and the quality of services offered. Everyone wants the best services that match their needs and which are offered at a pocket-friendly price. On top of that, other aspects of the care homes should be top-notch to ensure a pleasant stay and smooth experience there.

Here are some simple yet effective tips on choosing a memory care home in New Jersey.

1. Affordable costs of services and accepts insurance

Some of the cost factors to keep in mind are the monthly fee required, how often that fee changes, how much each of the care levels cost, the deposit or entry fee charged, what will happen if the patient’s needs changes, if there are annual increases to the prices and how far high can they go, the special offers or movie-in incentives, and any other charges that have not been mentioned upfront. You should keep in mind that New Jersey memory care facilities are more expensive than regular assisted living homes. You as the person paying for the services should look at the total cost and see if it is something you can afford comfortably and if it is around the budget you had planned for. You should also check if the facility accepts Medicaid and insurance covers, especially the ones you work with if you have one.

2. Good quality of memory care services offered

As far as the quality of services is concerned, you should check the kind of training the caregivers offer the patients, the ratio of the patients to the staff, the number of caregivers per shift, the facility’s preparedness for emergencies such as fire or natural disasters, the facility’s ability to care for the residents in the long term, how well the caregivers make the patients feel comfortable, how the facility deals with extreme cases of a patient’s difficult behavior, how well the services and activities suit each patient’s needs and desires, and how the food makes the patients get better and feel at home at the same time. While New Jersey has some of the best rated memory care homes, it helps to visit the facility at different times of the day on multiple occasions. It gives you a feel of how the environment is generally. Also, you can talk to the staff, the administration, and even the family members of the patients who are already there, if you can.

3. Reliable safety measures and features

A good memory care home considers the patients it will be having as residents and ensures that all the patients, despite their wide variety of needs, are all safe and secure every time. Some of the top features for safety to keep your eyes peeled for are emergency alert systems, interior courtyards, keypad entry, code-protected doors, round-the-clock supervision, and alarms on emergency exits. In essence, you should look around and confirm that, based on your loved one’s health condition, there are slim chances of them getting injuries or falling while in the facility. The buildings should also be designed in a way that is safe for all the patients and the apartments where the patients will be living should have safety features like hand-held bars, handrails, automatic lights, and emergency call buttons, among others. Also, it is important to consider how your loved one is on a typical day and how often they find themselves in risky situations that would risk their safety and security, and compare that to how well the facility is prepared to handle it. You can ask questions related to that, if need be, to gauge the facility’s level of preparedness for your loved one’s general and special behaviors.

4. Interesting and accommodating entertainment and dining activities

Like everyone, seniors need some fun time too. The NJ memory care facility you consider should have no shortage of entertainment activities. At the very least, it should have outdoor and indoor games, plenty of outside space with a pleasant environment. There should also be a TV set and movie nights. Different games and activities to cheer up the patients are a big thing and many top memory care centers invest heavily in them. When it comes to food, the center should also keep into consideration your loved one’s special diet needs in case they have them. Some centers even go a step further to make favorite foods for the patients and use their most beloved recipes on certain days and that plays a key role in making them feel completely at home.

5. Flexible arrangements for family involvement and visitations

If you are the only one responsible for the loved one you want to go to a memory care home, you should see that their plans for family visits and involvement sit well with your work schedule. Also, you can ask if they can adjust the arrangements even more to have them specifically fit your free days and the periods you want to dedicate to your loved one.
