Jessica Dennehy on Harnessing Your Subconscious Skills To Get Your Dream Career and Life

Reading Time: 9 mins read

Forget the drudgery of a 9-5. It’s all about fast-paced progress, setting your own time, and charting your own success. If you’re still scared and think the monotony of the traditional work environment is a good trade-in for ‘stability,’ you should think about taking a leaf from Jessica Dennehy’s book. Tired of the 9-5 life, she transformed her life by getting out and getting ahead.

Making such a significant change inevitably comes with its own chaos, but as Dennehy says, harnessing that inspiration and drive that motivated you to change your life is key to taking your business – and life – to the next level.

That mindset worked to motivate her in her own life, pushing her forward through whatever challenges she faced. It also helped her build Pivot & Slay. The company helps their clients to harness and redirect the chaos in their own lives to find the sort of success she did and the freedom that comes with building up your dream career.

Transformations in Work and Life

Today, Dennehy may be an influential entrepreneur and small business consultant, but that’s not where she started her journey. She began as an aspiring lawyer, where she found her first set of hurdles, waiting to make it off the waitlist to her dream school—which she did! Navigating past the challenges in law school, she learned that she was beginning to gain increased confidence and a new set of skills.

After law school came another surprising turn, where she landed herself a job as a Wall Street regulator. But the high-profile career wasn’t half as fulfilling as when Dennehy took her next step in 2012, launching a luxury barbershop that quickly gained traction. This was the first time she tasted the freedom that comes with being a business owner.

Dennehy decided to push forward with this feeling, using her regulatory and legal experience to help her along the way. Soon, she had quit Wall Street, expanded the business threefold, and opened a location overseas.

While it was all a huge success, life wasn’t done handing Dennehy challenges. When COVID-19 hit, her business was forced to close for several months, but she didn’t allow that to dull her entrepreneurial spark. With this driving her, she tapped into the need of the hour. She mobilized her contacts, helping to get 10,000 surgical masks where they were most needed at the beginning of the pandemic—in the hands of healthcare workers, seniors, first responders. And, she didn’t stop there. She also used her skills to help others navigate the pandemic, coaching small businesses to help them understand restrictions, loans, and reopening protocols.

Trust Your Instincts

Business is all about logic and pragmatism, and there’s no place in it for things like gut feelings and instinct, right? For Dennehy, trusting her instincts has been an excellent thing. Of course, there’s no way Dennehy would be in the position she’s in without an expanse of knowledge and the ability to navigate through every aspect of her life, from parenting to career goals. Hard work, humility, dedication, a positive mindset— Dennehy has it all, as well as the ability to tap into another side of herself and trust her inner compass.

Acting on your instincts can seem like you’re going against the grain when it comes to setting up your own business. For Dennehy, it’s made her a better business owner. Trusting her gut helped her take action to achieve all her goals, and what’s not to love about that?

With these instincts taking the lead, she’s also driven to use these experiences to empower others to find the same success she’s gotten. Her skillset helps her focus on what she enjoys doing best-changing other peoples’ lives for the better. With Pivot & Slay, she helps everyone from would-be entrepreneurs to business leaders to pivot their mindset to pivot their business towards success.

Just Dive In

Listening to her inner compass helps Dennehy move forward through all her goals without hesitation. She believes this is the trick to achieving success. Especially for business owners, even just being a dominant player in the field isn’t enough. The confidence to move forward will help you grow your business by leaps and bounds and unlock your true potential.

One thing Dennehy likes to tell her clients is that there’s no other way to begin than to “start starting.” It’s true of any kind of business, and while it can sometimes be challenging to take the plunge, the rewards from doing so are unlike any other. Like Dennehy did, it’s important to remember to make mistakes, face challenges confidently, and embrace your failures instead of being ashamed of them.

She’s now doing just that with Pivot & Slay. She helps people get past any niggling doubts to tap into potential with a positive mindset and guide them towards their dreams. Another thing Dennehy helps her clients do is tap into skill sets they don’t even know they have. All her past experiences—with law school, with Wall Street—came together to give her a set of unique skills she can use in every area of her life going forward.

Consider the determination you use to get past challenges, the motivation you need to finish a task, the creativity you use to cook—you never know what subconscious skills you have. Through consulting, Dennehy helps her clients recognize and, most importantly, utilize these skills effectively.

One of the ways she does this is by helping clients help themselves, whether it’s authors, digital media experts, influencers, or CEOs. With compassion, action, and her business acumen in the driver’s seat, she supports them at every step of the way. The goal is to help them tap into their own self-awareness. Clients who learn how to think strategically through her consulting can find longer-lasting success in their lives and careers—something that’s a priority for Dennehy with Pivot & Slay.
