The sound of Virginia hip-hop has never really surfaced in the mainstream music industry except for the golden era of artists such as Missy Elliot, Pusha-T, Timbaland and Pharrell. Over the years, artists from the Tidewater region have struggled to cut through the noise and plant their flag alongside major artists from New York, Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Nonetheless, two traits that Virginia rap will always stem from are polished lyricism and that vintage boom-bap sample sound plastered atop drum loops, which makes the rapper J.R.Clark and his latest album “When Muzik Was Good” stand out amongst others in today’s hip-hop scene.

Rappers who represent the respective sound of trap and drill music have a hefty burden to sustain longevity. This is simply a result of musicians lacking creativity and  delivering the same lyrical sound, cadence flow, production and imagery. The 757 rapper J.R.Clark continues to hang his hat on being authentic and different. Craving a lane in the music industry today with a vintage sound is highly shunned; however, J.R.Clark is not deterred by the critics; he has a strong conviction that good music will never go unheard; it is all about timing, patience, and perseverance.  Emphatically, like Rick Ross and Curren$y, the rapper J.R.Clark has his own unique style and sound that is within a lane of its own, which gives music listeners a different vibe, a vibe that is unparalleled in the music climate of the present-day.

To fast-forward, When Muzik Was Good has done exceptionally well with pure sales as an independent project, pushing just over 10,000 copies over a four month span. The 11 track album is deeply rooted in nostalgia, and gets better with time; meaning, the rapper flow and content has to grow on listeners. Trap rapper or Drill rapper is doubtlessly not the case from the native Virginia artist, his music is entrenched in the luxury life of things and mapping out how to elevate in all walks of life. Is J.R.Clark music here for the long haul? One can agree that younger listeners have to grow with age and time; therefore, music fans tend to explore other music avenues that better suit their current lifestyle to create a feel, so it’s safe to say that J.R.Clark music will catch on with time because there is a real passion behind the story Vintage Sound Entertainment.
