The Dangers of Riding in a Rideshare Car

The explosion of technology and more specifically, gig work has brought on a number of conveniences to our lives. Many of these are especially helpful considering the current circumstances.

Everyday tasks like grocery shopping and food delivery, restaurant delivery, car servicing, home repair, dog walking, and many other services can be performed for you with a swipe on a phone screen.

However, just because something is easy and convenient doesn’t mean we should do it without awareness and caution. When it comes to rideshare providers, there are a few safety concerns to consider, as well as how to avoid them altogether.

Poor or Even Unstable Drivers

Just because someone may have the record to qualify as a rideshare driver doesn’t mean that they are actually good drivers. (ways to report a bad driver) As drivers become more distracted by digital devices on the road, there is still no guarantee that you won’t get someone who drives too fast or takes the corners a little too sharp.

What is even scarier than that is the fact that some unfortunate riders have found themselves in situations with severely unstable and dangerous drivers. You never the day someone may forget to take medication critical to their ability to function rationally. Or the day someone has a few too many adult beverages while watching the game with friends and foolishly decides to take assignments.

Being Involved in an Accident

This is a huge risk because of the many things that may be tied into it. For example, not only is there the concern about getting in a crash, there is also the medical, legal, and financial repercussions that may follow.

There are some providers whose terms and conditions may declare that they are not liable if you are in an accident caused by the other driver. Since most people do not read the entire T&C of an app or website before they agree, few of them realize that they could get into a big ordeal if the wrong scenario arises.

In addition to calling the police, you will want to contact an Uber or Lyft accident lawyer as soon as possible. There is no telling at this point what you may or may not need or be entitled to. This is especially true if you have sustained some type of injury as a result.

If there are medical bills, lost time at work, rehab, and other issues to consider, waiting on the rideshare people to “do the right thing” is probably not the best course of action. There is also the possibility of unknown physical damage as well. Get a check-up at the hospital even if you feel fine. A good lawyer can help in all of these areas at the same time.

Getting in the Wrong Vehicle

A very common mistake is rideshare users getting into the wrong vehicle. It is even more common among customers who use these services as transportation during outings involving alcohol.

Since any given number of people may be expecting a ride at the same time, it is easy to see how this mistake is made often. Then it can be halfway to a destination that you don’t recognize before you realize you are in the wrong car.

It should also be noted that women may potentially be exposed to even more dangers, especially when riding alone. The best solution is to always ride with a friend, when possible. Another is to only request drivers that you are familiar with or have favorited.
